Protein shake - before or after workout?
So, when should I drink my protein shake, right before working out or right after it? (or should I drink it in any other time of the day?)
Btw, a friend told me that eating some pasta (like spaghetti or something) like 1 hour before working out was great...true or false, and why?
Oh, the objective is to build up muscle, there are calories/diet restrictions, and I'm 19 if it matters.

After. When your working out, you want to put lots of stress on whatever muscle your targeting. (Of course not to the point where there's an injury) Once you broke down the muscle, making it very tired.
That's when you drink the shake. The protein is used in the process to help the muscle repair, and when it's fully healed it becomes bigger.
This seems like a short process, but it happens over time. Protein Shakes are also best to drink before bed, in the morning, but mostly after workout.

This is true. To build muscle, you need good nutrition. Not only should your calorie intake consist of protein, but also carbohydrates. Carbohydrates play a big part in building muscle. You need lots of them. Pasta, is a great carb source that's considered "good carbs" and not fatty.
Other than Pasta, Rice (Yellow or Brown) are great carb options...Breads are also good.

It's most important to get your protein after the workout. you've torn all the muscle fibers up previously and your body begins to repair them afterwards so you need that protein. depending on what time of the day it is and what I've already eaten sometimes I'll also have a shake an hour before my workout so my body has access to those amino acids and calories to support the workout. I'm not a body builder so I don't usually do it but some people also like to have a shake right before bed. Your body does most of it's regeneration and repair while you sleep so the thinking is give it those building blocks right before bed.
The carbohydrates in pasta can provide some sustained energy and it's been a long time tradition for athletes to have a meal like that before a game however I wouldn't really recommend that for a regular gym workout.

It best to have it at both times.... moreover it's better after a workout. That's when your muscles need the nutrients. Drinking some beforehand will help get nutrients, amino acids to your muscles right away. That's really the only time you should have a protien shake during the day. Protien shakes digest and hit your system rather quickly. Anymore than 25-30g of protien from a shake at one time is a waste.
For the rest of the day it's better to get your protein from egg whites, tuna/fish, chicken, and beef. You only need to eat beef a two to 3 times a week for it's strong BCAA.
Carbs help create more of the pump and give you enegry. Pasta, oatmeal, potatos are all good.
Part of the point is to keep the diet as clean as possible. This is why it's good to avoid food with strange additives such as what you would find at McDonald's. I have read plenty of recommendations saying protien powder and shakes should only be consumed if you're starving and need nutirents right away.

Okay, you need to drink protein shakes after workouts because during workouts your muscles break down and protein replenishes them. Also the pasta before workouts is true because it contains carbohydrates which give you the energy to work-out. Also remember to drink plenty of water.
Hope this helped,
Good Luck!

Both, but if you had to choose, defiantly go for pre-workout, here's why:
- Fuel Your Muscles. This is key because exercise causes the breakdown and oxidation of BCAAs. Providing BCAAs to working muscles will prevent the need for your body to catabolize the working muscle itself.
- Increase Protein Synthesis. Adding protein prior to your training session primes the pump: It starts protein synthesis during rather than after your training session. In otherwords, Pre-workout protein increases amino acid delivery and uptake by muscles during training.
- Burn More Calories.
- Carryover Effect. There is also a carryover effect of nutrients taken in the pre-workout period. After ingesting protein, muscle protein synthesis can stay elevated as long as 3 hours.
Enjoy =)

If I were you, I wouldn't take protein shakes at all. I don't have anything against them, I just think that they can't help a man build muscle. As for the workout, you may keep on doing it, but you may also take a look at http://is.gd/6TFHC2 , as it's a system that can teach you how to build muscle fast.

The whole idea that a relationship exists between the workout time and the time of consumption of nutrients is pure bunk not grounded in science. When you consume food, the nutrients are not passed to the blood stream for one to 10 hours depending on the food substance, the GI transit time, and many other factors. So the difference between consuming nutrients immediately before or after a workout will have no effect on muscular development. Nutrition is needed over the entire muscle recovery period of several days and the pre-workout and post-workout supplement meme is just propaganda created by supplement makers to sell more junk to suckers. I challenge anyone to show me any good science which supports the benefit of workout time related supplementation over a nutritious diet of food.
