Mountain bikers vs Road cyclists questions?

(are those the correct terms?)

1) Will one get you in shape for the other?

2) What's the difference in terms of fitness? (breathing, stamina, strength, cardio, speed, etc.)

3) Is a mountain biker always gonna win on a mountain bike vs a roaddie? or a roddie always win on a road bike vs a mountain biker?

4) Is there a difference between the two races in terms of atmosphere amongst the cyclists? (not in terms of terrain/setting) (relaxed/tense/etc)

5) Any other similarities/differences?

BQ: Which do you overall prefer & why?

    1) No most but many members of my club do both. Summer road, winter mountain, sometimes alternating..

    2) When I am riding a mountain I have the same fitness and all that that I have when I ride a road.

    3) Scratching my head. SMH? Do you mean putting a mountain biker with a MTB on the road next to a roadie? Or a rodie with the 700X23 on the mountain trail next to a MTBker?

    4)

    5) Many pro road racers were competing on MTB at a younger age.

    6) At my age I prefer the smoothness of the road rather than the the bumps and jarring of the rough trails.

A road bike will get you in better shape then a mountain bike in my opinion. The top mountain bikes use a road bike to do their training. I ride rail trails a lot and go for hours at a lower energy level and ride at least 30 miles to 75. On the road I ride a lot harder and spend 60-90 min and only do 25 miles. I don't think what bike you ride makes any difference it's how hard you train. I like road bikes a little more they just beg you to want to go faster. Trails are nicer in the summer months when the sun is out and its hot and the trails are shaded.
