Question about my keyboard?

I am running windows xp on a dell optiplex. I have a dell keyboard that plugs into the keyboard PS/2 slot in the back of the machine. When i plug the keyboard in, things on the keyboard like num lock, caps lock, etc all work. But when i type, nothing happens. I noticed when i plug the keyboard in, the connection is a little looser than normal. What is going on, and what should i do?

Thanks

turn the computer off and turn it back on. PS2 isn't plug and play like USB is. The keyboard has to be plugged in before the computer is turned on.
