Red Eared Slider likes diving?

Our RES has a new trick... he climbs up on his basking spot and has taken to jumping off the ledge and into the water. He does this repeatedly and he seems to start performing when we are near his house. He is very interactive with us and a very busy turtle in his aquarium but we are concerned that he could harm himself with all this diving. He is about 4 years old and his shell is about 6 inches from front to back. There are no chips or cracks, plus he recently shed. His dive is about 8 inches into 4 inches of water. He seems happy but it is a new behavior and we dont want him to get hurt. Any thoughts would really be appreciated.

Update:

I dont think we are startling him. I can be in the next room just sitting and reading and he will be doing it. He will also do it when there is a group of people playing cards at the table. He loves interaction and will come right up to check you out, even eating from your hand. He is a very interesting little guy. So much personality. He also has his own pet fish. They play together and swim together. We got it for him last Christmas and he has no interest in eating Alex (the fish, a male betta) They even bump noses from time to time. It is a curious situation. I just want to be sure he is ok. We love him.

Normally when RES's dive off their basking spot into the water, it is a response from being startled, I've never heard of anyting quite like this. If you' re worried about him possibly hurting himself, the best idea is to deepen the water. Hope this helps!

Based on his size, I would make the water deeper, anyway.

Just make sure that there is nothing in the way and that he can't scratch his plastron on anything and he'll be fine - sounds like you have a very entertaining turtle! Though it could be that you are just startling him, causing him to leave the basking area...
