Seniors, do you now live alone? If so, have your eating habits changed since you started cooking for one?

I was a slave in the kitchen at one time, having cooked meals on the table at specific times to suit others whether I wanted to eat then or those particular foods or not. I'm now alone for the first time in 44 years and friends think I'm neglecting myself because I don't always have a cooked dinner at some point in every 24 hours.

I eat well and I eat just what I feel like at the time but I am not going hungry and I am not eating things which are not good for me. I include nutritious foods in my diet but sometimes I'm happy with a sandwich or just something on toast e.g. scrambled egg. I cook on more days that I don't cook and I think it is lovely to have the choice and feel that, at last, I can please myself.

In the two months that I have been living alone I have opened only 3 cans (one beans, one beans with sausages and one tomato soup) and I've used one packet of 4 cup-a-soups. All other meals have been prepared by me properly but not necessary cooked dinners (potatoes, meat and vegetables etc). I eat bananas, apples and pears (not oranges but I like orange juice and pineapple juice) and I like to eat tomatoes as a fruit. I think that some people put too much emphasis on having a cooked hot meal every day.

Did any of you find that your choice of meals changed when you no longer had to take into account the wants and expectations of other people or do you still follow the habits of a lifetime?

Update:

It took an internet search to find what Souffers are. I now know that they are ready prepared frozen meals - probably very like what we can buy from Iceland or Bird's Eye.

I have changed my eating habits since living alone, but I stick to fresh fruit and veg rather than canned for the most part. I do have beans on toast, if I do not feel particularly hungry and choose what I want to suit how I feel.

I made fish and chips last Sunday, and when I told a neighbour, she said, fish and chips on Sunday, how odd.!

For me though, it is important to eat to keep your self healthy, so as long as you eat, then just have what you feel like.

Sometimes I will venture forth to my local carvery and splash out for a fiver, but that is a rare treat in this economic climate. Just have what you enjoy.

Yes and it took a while to learn to cook less. I eat nutritional sandwiches and soup too. Sometimes a keep a couple of Stouffers on days I've been running around. Then other days I eat a cooked meal. Mostly fish and chicken. I just made some curry chicken for the first time. So I am trying out new recipes. I also make smoothies to get my fruit in because sometimes it rots before I get to it. But now I cook what I like and eat when I want. Today I will probably have rice and black beans.

I had a large family and I like to say that 'I'm all cooked out' now.

I have never liked to cook and still don't.

I use frozen dinners often and veggies and fruit and nuts and fresh lettuce.

To tell the truth I like things that would be considered finger food. As long as it doesn't

take much to prepare on my part.

I don't have bread, rice, potatoes and that kind of thing in the house.

Instant oatmeal packets are o.k. but I do have regular cook oatmeal too.

I also have lamb and chicken that I get from Costco and re wrap and freeze.

I also make bean soup and freeze.

The problem being alone is fresh food is difficult to eat up before it goes bad.

If I do cook it has to be a one pot start on the stove and forget kind of thing.

An advantage of catering for one is that there are no real time restrictions.

My eating habits haven't changed much. If cooking a meal is running a little late, my stomach is the only thing to moan, not that my family ever complained anyway. Cold meals are a nice change, especially in hot weather, or even a ploughman's lunch.

One of the things I found annoying was that it costs more to buy smaller portions.

It didn't take me long to get round that with the use of a good set of kitchen knives, cleaver, poultry shears, a good chopping board, a selection of freezer bags and, of course, a freezer.

I cook what is healthy and tastes good. I go to too much trouble though and will have to simplify things. I make oatmeal with chopped fresh apple in it, and spices, raisins, etc. every other day. On the alternate days I have an egg, maybe an omelet and put fresh spinach in it if I have it on hand, once or twice a week usually. I have Flax seed toast every day also, real butter, simply fruit jams. I eat a lot of healthy stuff like organic non-fat milk, fresh veges every day (3 kinds usually). But it was nice when my daughter who lives 3000 miles away stayed and she loved the oatmeal.

I have always been told I am a good cook and I like whatever I have to be tasty, with meat, salads, veggies, etc. I buy mostly fresh veggies and steam them. My worst problem is lack of fruits in my diet, except when it is bing cherry season. lol

Last week I made a pot of tasty stew and put a little too much liquid in. So the liquid is in the freezer and another container that I fill with left over veggies to make a nutritious soup with. Waste not, want not.

When my husband died, I didn't care if I ate or not. I cooked as minimally and simply as I could to maintain living. I loved cooking for my husband.

I lost weight, didn't care, took me about two years to begin to plan, purchase and cook things I actually enjoyed again.

I have a house mate now, we often share the evening meal, sometimes he will cook, sometimes me. The biggest change is his preferences are different in many ways than mine, so again learning to shop and cook something we both like. I always did appreciate leftovers, he does not. We will work it out, we are eating pretty well, too much beef for my preferences, sometimes I will cook a flounder fillet for me, not what he likes, he will make something else for himself. Pretty much works out OK, we are eating reasonably healthy and getting an ample amt of food.

i usually make a big batch of something and eat it all week long or portion it and freeze it. Right now I'm working on a batch of soup made with carrots, zuchini, onions, potatoes, hominy, tomatos and cabbage. I eat that with warm garlic bread. Most of what I eat is healthy and small meals.
