What is the most affordable grain free dog food?
I am trying to get to the bottom of my dogs allergy without having to pay for expensive allergy testing. At the moment I am trying to rule out a food allergy by changing her food to a grain free hypoallergenic variety. I got her some Orijen, which she loves!!! But it is soooo expensive, and made in Canada. Ideally I am looking for a uk alternative that I can use for a while to see if it helps stop her itching/biting her inflamed skin.

I don't know if you'll be successful in finding a cheap grain-free dog food. You could try going to your local pet food store and ask for some samples of different kinds, just to see which ones your dog likes. Then run with that brand and see if the allergy symptoms improve. In the long run a more expensive dog food tends to cost not much more than cheaper brands (imo) because they do tend to keep your dog healthier (less costly vet visits for problems) and most dogs tend to eat a bit less in volume of the better grade dog food.
My border collie pup had been on Blue Buffalo - which is a higher-end food - but was having chronic diarrhea issues (my older dog too, also on Blue Buffalo, was displaying similar symptoms, though less in degree). So I switched both of them to Taste of the Wild, which is completely grain-free, and within less than a week my puppy's diarrhea disappeared - as did my older dog's - and both have been much healthier ever since.

Do you have the time to cook for your dog? A home cooked diet can be quite economical and at the same time far superior to any commercial dog foods. It just has to be well balanced. When our dogs were solely on a home cooked diet their coats were better than ever. They ate twice a day. Their breakfast was varied. Sometimes it was a scrambled egg with nitrate free bacon or a whole meat (non processed chicken, turkey, beef, venison, rabbit, etc) and sometimes some cooked oats. For dinner they had non processed meat, sweet potato or white rice and a bit of veggie such as steamed broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, carrot, green beans, peas.
On one meal they had some brewer's yeast sprinkled on it, and sometimes some ground egg shells (not stamped with dyes). Ground egg shells are bone meal. They also had occasional organ meat such as chicken liver, beef liver, beef heart. No spices any of this except sometimes a bit of sea salt. They had snacks that included dog biscuits made with human grade ingredients, and they actually did not react to grains that were in a home made recipe for dog biscuits.
In addition, we gave them fish oil capsule with each meal. Occasional live active cultured yogurt provides beneficial bacteria. Other snacks could be cored slices of apple, banana slices (in the summer, frozen with a bit of peanut butter and grated carrot on top.)
Once we got in the swing of home cooking with healthy supplements, they did great. You can also get some Ester C for dogs in a pet store. This is a supplement that builds their immune system. Some of the supplements are costly, but they last a long time.

I would look into a prey model raw diet.
GREAT for dogs with allergies, you control all the ingredients and often times if they happen to be allergic to a protein say chicken in kibble form, they can eat fine in raw form. The process of making kibble changes the ingredients so much the body doesn't even recognize them as the same thing.
And raw can be as cheap or as expensive as you make it. It's all in how you shop.
