diesel in a kerosene heater?

i have been all over the internet and have come to the conclusion that octane may play a key role in the way #2 diesel will behave in a wick style heater, so my question is why not just add some octane booster like Outlaw 108 available at any auto parts store. the price of kerosene is up to $5.79 a gallon while the diesel is just over $4.00. and i use about a hundred gallons each winter in my shop

I ran diesel in my regular style Korosene heater with zero problems. And a buddy I know runs diesel in his wick unit.

You can run the diesel on the wick style heater. Supposedly it reduces the life of the wick.

I would also advise you to pick up a bottle of Diesel Kleen Fuel Additive at walmart. If you shop does not get to freezing temps, then just buy the summer blend (gray bottle). Pour a little on the diesel fuel, it will help the diesel last longer.

If its marked Kerosene I run diesel in it period. Diesel has a higher BTU output, so you get more heat for less money.

For those who don t know.? Diesel has 106 known toxins when burned off. I worked in NYC mass transit as a electrician. We were only allowed to use a diesel generator by MTA of NYC.for power. Also for safety. (less chance of under ground fires. The fumes that are put out gave us head aches. Fumes also cause respiratory / breathing problems. So Diesel used in a HOME Kerosene heater. NO.

I have been using diesel in my kerosene heater because it's a loy cheaper but u honestly don't think its worth it. With the kerosene it heats up to about 70 degrees but with the diesel it doesn't get above 58. If your wanting heat the kerosene is worth paying for. Also with the diesel I go through wicks in my heater at least 5 times as fast. Diesel burns the wick a LOT faster

Do not try diesel. You can drop a match in it and it will not burn, like kerosene will

Diesel requires high heat to ignite in a diesel engine when it is compressed, the temperature rises enough to ignite.

Octane booster will not work either.

It may burn that is it.

Octane booster increases the fuel's resistance to burn. Especially in Gasolene engines the gas can start to ignite before the piston hits top dead center or before the spark plug to ignite the gas.

This is called knocking, some or all the gas may burn, allowing multiple explosions.

Even if you could get the diesel to light, it has more energy than kerosene and will burn hotter.

This could caused the heater to start on fire.

Source(s): It is abd idea that will not work or will cause a fire. the heater is manufactured to burn kerosene only. Look at natural gas vs. propane gas grills. Propane burns hotter and has smaller jets to allow less propane than natural gas. Burning it in a natural gas set up will burn to hot, destroy it or start afire.

I wouldnt recommend using diesel for the fact of the way it smells when burned. Ever stuck your face to a diesel exhaust?...x10 the affect with a heater. Your eyes would start to water.

I wouldn't be afraid to use that mixture in a heater myself.
