What kind of cartridge is this? Headstamp read "22" at 12 o'clock and "72" at 6 o'clock.?

Looks too new to be from the 70s. Found it on a range trip one day and put in my misc. bullet bag. Overall case length is a little longer then a 7.62x54R. But shorter then .30-06. The case is rimless. Case color looks like steel [?] and is gray in color. Bullet diameter looks like a .308sh caliber. I'm pretty sure it's a 7.62x51. I could be wrong so any guesses.

Also if I could get a manufacturer and production year.

Update:

The 8mm Mauser has a case length equal to the .30-06. So this doesn't add up.

Also factory 22 is the code for Romania. This doesn't make sense since it almost looks like new manufacture. Also if it's 7.62 NATO why was it made in a Warsaw pack county. I don't think it's a 7.62x39 since it's to long and skinny and not a 5.45 becacause it doesn't have the same bullet diameter.

Update 2:

I know what the case length of most of the well known cartridges are. Especially if there in the name.

    It's Romanian 8x57 Mauser. 8x57 case length is actually shorter than 30-06 case length.

    I shoot Romanian 8x57 surplus all the time. It's actually pretty good plinking ammo. Corrosive but cheap, always fires. Here's a photo: http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7...

    Not a expert, but it sounds a lot like possibly 8mm Mauser judging from the case length.

    7.62x51 has a case length shorter than 7.62x54R, that's what the x51 and x54 means. 30-06 has a case length of 63mm and 8mm Mauser 57mm.

    Source(s): My guess for manufacture year is 1972, cant possibly think of what the 22 means though. Maybe a code for the plant where it was made.

    I agree with " Someone who cares ". The commie block countries produced steel case 7.62 Nato way back! If it was stored clean and dry, ammo from the 70's will look brand new! I'm assuming the case is painted gray, and not raw steel? Most of this was made for FAL rifles in 3rd world countries. :)

    Just a guess..

    22 = Plant 22, Romania, address unknown

    72 = 1972

    I'm speculating it's a 7.62x52 or what has been called the 7.62 NATO. Check the case with a magnet and if it's attracted it came from Asia. The head stamp tells me it's a casing that was manufactured for the military. You can check on Wiki for the dimensions of your suspected cartridge.
