Excellent choice of breed, Maine Coons and Ragdolls come from old fashioned Turkish Angora blood, and are usually very brave, very friendly and very good companions.

They shed, quite a lot. But then again, no outfit is complete without the cat hair. :) That's my motto. Invest in a brush.

Cats are some of the most loving, cleanest, and most loyal of pets. Try to find one at a rescue.

A breed standard female cat runs 9-13 lbs while males are larger and tend to run 13-18 lbs.

*How much do they eat?

Same as any other cat.

* How much fur do they shed?

Not much but they do require a weekly COMBING - not brushing.

And most important question:

* Would it be safe to let it roam about outside like a regular cat?

Absolutely NOT. And the only way to get a Maine Coon cat or kitten is to buy one from a TICA, CFA or ACFA breeder who will make you sign a contract stating that the cat will be INDOORS at all times. And since you're going to pay at LEAST $600 for this kitten/cat you'd be pretty foolish to let it out of your sight, anyway.

Also note that the "Maine Coons" you see in the paper, on craigslist, etc are NOT Maine Coons. They're simply longhaired domestics that unscrupulous backyard breeders are trying to pass off as "Maine Coons". No TICA, CFA or ACFA pedigree? NOT a Maine Coon.

And FYI - NO breeder will allow you to purchase a cat or kitten you intend to give as a gift. Your girlfriend would have to be the one APPROVED to buy the cat or kitten.

edit: "Pup" - might want to stick with dogs as your comments are completely bogus. The Maine Coon has NO connection with the Turkish Angora neither does the Ragdoll. Both of these breeds were created from selective breeding of domestics in the US while the the Turkish Angora is (no big surprise) from TURKEY!

Purebred MC's from reputable breeders start at $600+ for pet kittens. Reputable breeders will never sell or place kittens during the holidays like Christmas.

Maine Coon males fully grown can get 18-25 + lbs (at 4-5 yrs old) Females are about 12-15 lbs fully grown. They shed a lot and should be combed 2-3 times a week. MC's need to be on a high quality dry, canned and raw meat diet.

Most breeders frown on letting their cats outside to roam unsupervised and the contracts you sign state the kitten/cat will remain as an indoor pet.

Im sure he/she would be fine outside as long as you dont have any dogs or the dogs you do have are friendly.

they do not shed to much fur so you are ok there thy can be quite big cats though espeacially a male females are smaller after its ou grown its kitten stage just leave dry food down the bes is james well beloved this is real food for them and doest have so many e numbers ect i would give it 2/3 wet pouches a day and always leave dry food around good luck
