Do they verify identification/full legal name of people sent to prison?

Looking at a crime supposedly committed in London,1972 where person was jailed. However, it turns out his legal name was completely different from the name he was raised with and he never knew about it until he applied for a passport years after that. Surely, if he was imprisoned he would have known his real name (from birth certificate). Rather a frightening thought if identification isn't actually verified for prisoners. Please help.

Update:

OK, so fingerprints make sense. Thanks... but is there a way they verify the name you are first jailed under, or do they just use whatever you tell them?

They make ID's from fingerprints- it's pretty foolproof.

As has already been suggested, by means of finger prints. The person concerned would also be on record as " Also known as....". So a full history of names or aliases used would be on record.
