Divide 1000 barrels in 2 batches of 500. mix wine frm each of 500 barrels in a glass & 1 person drinks it. if he dies this batch has poison if he lives then its the other batch.

now take the batch with poison & divide 500 barrels in 250-250. repeat the process assuming 1 person dies in every test.

500-500; 1st man dies

250-250; 2nd man dies

125-125; 3rd man dies

62-63; 4th

31-32; 5th

16-16; 6th

8-8; 7th

4-4; 8th

2-2; 9th

1 - 1; 10th man dies

1 barrel remaining & that's the poisoned one.

Label the barrels using ten binary digits. You could do 1024 barrels this way, but that's fine, you just disregard the extra 24 possibilities. Assign each slave a digit position, and give him a glass with a bit of wine from each barrel where his digit position is a 1. They can then all drink their glasses at the same time. To write down the answer, for each slave that dies, write a 1 in his digit position, and for each slave that is still alive, put a 0 in his digit position. The resulting written binary number will identify the poisoned barrel.

can't you have each slave taste 10 barrels, one at a time, like slave A tastes barrel 1, then 2, and so on, until one slave drops dead? and then where you stop it the poison barrel?

oh okay, so like Slave A drinks a mix of Barrel 1 & 2, Slave b=2&3, S. C=3&4 and so on and which ever two drops dead it's the barrel they both drank from right?

here's a starting point:

if there were only 10 barrels each slave would drink from 1 barrel

if we add a barrel each would drink from 1-10 and slaves 1 and 2 add barrel 11 to their mix. if only 1 slave dies its in his barrel if both 1 & 2 die its in barrel 11.

add another barrel and each slave drinks from 1-10 and slave 1&2 drink from 11, while 3&4 drink from 12 etc..

I'm not sure if this can be extended out to 1000 barrels though.

can we open the barrels and mix the wines before the slaves taste em?

if we can, then we can mix 500-500 in two big barrels and 1 guy drinking it...if dies...then split those 500 into 250-250 (if he dosent then split the other half)....and so on...and in the less than 10 guys we can find the poisoned barrel...but can we do this??
