wi fi question? I know so little..?
Getting a service provider is not an option right now. This Grandma now loves computers. But dont know much about how it all works.Never had a computer but got spoiled on a visit where I had great fun just with the basics.. search, games, etc. Now I WANT one,.. I was told to buy a lap top and get a wi fi card. I havent a clue what this is. I know local coffee shops offer it free. I am not from the tech generation and not sure how this works. Clerk in store gave me too much info. (Didnt understand a word he said). Any help on this would be greatly appreciated as I heard lap tops will be cheaper and cheaper due to the popularity of the tablets and I phones everyone likes.. The print is too small for me. Thanks, very grateful for any help.

You got a lot of good answers. But because I've been where you are, and didn't understand the big words they used, I'll try to translate.
My lap top has a tiny button on the front edge, which I can slide one way or the other if I'm where wifi is available. If I slide it on, it picks up wifi. Your lap top will probably have the wifi card already. You'd have to see if wifi is available in your building. Or if there's a free wifi place close to you.
To get a local area connection, which you buy though a phone company, or TV cable company, is around thirty dollars a month. Then they come to your house, and you are connected as soon as you turn on your lap top. But that only works when you're in your house.
You can also buy an air card, (it is a 1 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch plastic piece,) which you plug into your lap top, and that way you can connect anywhere if you travel. But that's more like $60. a month. At least through Verizon.
I have my lap top set so that the print, (called font) is larger, all the time. So you'll be able to make your font bigger. If you buy a lap top, don't let them talk you into a lot of memory, or add ons. You won't need it. Mine is just a basic lower prices lap top and it's still great after four years.
And if you do need bigger print, a 17 inch screen would make it easier to see more of the page with bigger print. But you can get by with a 15 inch screen too.
I like mine so much that I keep at least five hundred dollars in savings all the time in case I have to get a new one. Good luck and have fun learning.

Most PC's are wifi enabled. It saves you having cables all over the floor.
You will need a router to connect to the internet, then radio waves will allow you to use the net without a cable to a source. You can connect to any software that is wifi enabled. Printer,Mouse.you vcan take your laptop into, say, the bedroom without the need of cables.
Any decent retailer should assist you.
I don't know why getting a new SP is not an option, but some offer a router as part of a package and will even set it up (at a nominal price I presume)
WiFi is not necessary if you don't mind the cables,it's just much, much more convenient

I don't know of any new laptops that aren't already wifi enabled. If you already live within a wifi hot spot you don't even need a modem, just turn on your computer and do your thing. So check that out before investing in a modem

Almost all laptops come with a wifi card. You can go to Walmart and buy a laptop for a few hundred dollars. Just make site it says either wireless or wifi.

Wifi is an acronym for : Wireless Internet Frequency Interchange. It is a mechanism for wirelessly connecting electronic devices such as computers.
It's an Australian invention.
Just thought I'd let you know.

Try going to your local library or community college - they have computer courses for beginners and you'll learn a lot ! The more you know, the better you'll enjoy your computer.
