Fix cracks in walls that bulge outwards?

These are in an older home, circa 1930. Up to 4 feet long. The cracks are not open, but seem to bulge out...One suggestion to repair this is to cover with mesh tape and then apply drywall compound over it, the same way you would link two drywall boards. Will this work, or is there a better way?

These are stress cracks in plaster & like to come back over time. What i did & they didn't return was to score 2 lines a bit wider than mesh drywall tape. Then i used a pull scraper to create a recess into the plaster so it would be like a 2" wide by 4' long recess. Prime with BIN primer, then lay the mesh tape in the recess & apply 2 thin coats of joint compound. I've used this technique without fail.

Drywall compound is made for drywall. While there are plaster kits to patch to your walls I doubt that you will be able to match the texture that is already present on the wall. I have drywalled directly over lathe before with excellent results, but I think you and I both know that it is time to start knocking out the old plaster stuff and replacing it with the drywall.

It's really hard to give you an anwer without knowing how far they bulge out. If its only like 1/8 inch you can open the crack and buy special patching compounds made for patching small cracks in plaster. If it's larger the plaster in that area has pulled away from the lath and you have a bigger problem.
