can work see personal email account emails?

ok so me and my friend have been arguing about this, he says they can, and i say they cant.

say he is at work, and he logs onto his gmail account, and sends his wife emails, nothing wrong them the email, just reminders like, remember to pick up beer, but can work actually see the emails that he sends? i know they can see he logged onto his account, but can they actually see the contents of the email?

Update:

he works for "verizon" so i would imagine they have one. lol

The bottom line is this: when you are at work you are on the employer's time, equipment, and network. And if it is theirs, they are legally able to access it. You are not entitled to privacy for any personal work or communication done using their stuff.

The rule of thumb is this: follow their guidelines regarding personal use of the computers/internet, and assume that they can and will view your personal internet use and if you use it for anything inappropriate, expect to be called on it.

There are a variety of ways that your usage and communication can be viewed or recorded. Data on hard drives and the internet never really goes away.

Follow the rules, be professional, and if you need to remind your spouse to get something on the way home text or call them (assuming you do so on your personal phone). If you have a work issued phone, they will see your activity there too.

Source(s): Trust me on this, we've worked for a variety of businesses and law enforcement agencies for years doing digital and data recovery. I have recorded and used terminated employee's IM history and email against them.

Yes, but it requires special remote viewing software. I'm sure that some companies do use software like that. I know my high school had it, and it could be used for remote controlling of the computer as well (although there was no "stealth" mode for that.)

To clarify, they would have had to see it happening in real time, like watching him type the words onto the screen. There is no way for them to open up your friend's emails later whenever they feel like it. Unless they also have keyloggers installed on the machines and stole his private information (email login info) to access his account illegally.
