My new SONY 64bit computer is on Windows 7. I am not too pleased with it yet. HELP?

My previous main computer was on XP and my laptop running on Vista. With my main computer now operating on "Windows 7, Home Premium", on 64 bit,- whatever that means, I am not able to run any of my old programmes and in particular 'Windows Word' and similar programmes, that I really need to transfer and access. Is there an easy solution to my problem?

You mean Microsoft Word or Windows Word Pad?

Word is part of the Office suite, you need to have the CD and reload it, enter a valid code and it should run all versions of 2002 (Office XP) 2003, 2007 and the new 2010 versions, Windows 7 is not particularly happy with the 2000 and any earlier versions.

Word Pad is still part of W7, you will find it (as before) in the Accessories folder from the Start and All Programs button.

There are many older XP programs that were upgraded versions of Windows 98 programs and most of thee will not run on W7, it does have a compatibility mode and you could try using that to install and run your older programs. The logical alternative is buy or download newer versions of the software you have.

When you install any application or run one, I recommend you try this. Right click and select run as administrator. Also right click and select properties. Here you will be able to set certain compatabilities and also selct run as administrator as a default.

I have a 64 bit laptop and almost everything will run with a little coaxing. If not as the others suggested do a search for open source 64 bit apps

Some programs aren't always compatible with Windows 7, but I can't see why Word isn't working, unless it's a particularly old version.

You can download Libreoffice or openoffice that are compatible with Word (in terms of documents, but not macros).

As for the others it depends on what they are.

Easy solution is take it to a professional and pay them. Free solution is talk to a friend or a family member who knows more about computers than you. Asking for help from strangers online will be difficult since we cannot exactly see your problems and you have to be specific with your questions.
