Advice on DIY hair colorings?

I've never dyed my hair before, but it's getting a little gray in it. It's dark brown. Should I just go to the store and buy something to color it with or should I go to the salon and have them do it? It'd be great to save money if I can, but I don't want to ruin the texture of my hair. Thanks for any advice!

Update:

I forgot to mention that I don't want it black or blonde. I'm not looking for color suggestions, just suggestions on whether the drugstore colorings are any good.

I'm licensed so I'll give you my advice. You"re not my client so I can tell you the truth. The truth is, you can do it yourself with no problem. I would go to Sally's beauty supply and look for the shade that matches your hair color. Don't be afraid to ask for help from one of the girls working there. It's there job. Once you choose the color, get a small bottle of developer. It will say 10V and that is deposit hair color only. You don't need a huge bottle either. Somewhere near the bottles of developer you will find smaller bottles for a few dollars.

The mixing part is very easy. It's equal parts. So if you use 5oz of hair color which is usually the tube size, you will use 5 oz of 10 V developer. Check developer bottle and see how many oz it says. Most of the time it's exactly matched with the color but if not, you can eye it. Kinda like cooking. I never measure my hair color bc I have been doing it for forever. Most of the time the color comes with gloves. You will need a mixing bowl or use a plastic bowl from the kitchen. You will need a color brush. They are cheap too. Like 99 cents at Sally's.

I'll assume you will need 2 boxes of the same color depending on thickness and length....added with the developer and color brush, you are looking maybe 15 dollars. A salon will charge you at least 40 bucks and will go up accordingly with length.

I have not personally used Walmart hair color but before I was licensed I used loreal color gems and they worked just as good as professional products.

    Good luck!

You will have to select a product which is good for grey coverage.

However. Some of these products contain metalic salts which, if you use a different colour product on top of it, can cause no end of problems..

If you do go ahead, try to get a close match to your current hair colour, remember the tone (red, copper, ash) maybe different from your original hair tone so take someone with you to give their opinion.

Once you use the product make sure you remember what colour and brand it is, maybe just keep the little corner bit of the box with the number of it, then use that colour again, only on your regrowth area when it needs done again.

I promise you that dying it one would not affect your hair so much. You do not have to have it professionally done, you just have to make sure that you skin test the dye before usage so that you don't get an allergic reaction. to do this but I little dye behind your earlobe with a cotton swab and see if you feel any itching or burning. Also keep in mind you may need 2 boxes of dye to do your hair depending on thickness and quantity
