  • Problem with cable internet LAN on laptop.?

Someone gave me a used laptop. I tried to hook it up to my cable ethernet, and it won't work with it. First it didn't recognize the connection, so I downloaded new drivers. The drivers helped it recognize that there was a connection, but then I got an error message that said the connection wasn't working because I had to renew my IP address. I followed the directions to do that (found directions online), but it's still not working with the ethernet connection. It works when I'm in a wifi hot spot, but I don't have wifi at home. The previous owner had set up 2 broadband connections -- would this affect whether it would work with my cable modem? Do laptops get attached to their first connection and then are unable to adapt to new ones? Any helpful hints? Thanks. I'm trying to keep costs down. I only paid about $100 including shipping for this laptop -- it's an XP -- and I really can't afford to take it somewhere to have it worked on. Thanks.

  • How do I hook up cable internet to a Windows XP laptop?

I just got a hand-me-down Win XP Lenovo ThinkPad. I plugged in the cord that goes to the cable internet (I have no wifi in the house), but I don't know what to do from there. The former owner of the laptop had set up a couple of broadband connections for his house, but when I click on "broadband" the computer asks me for my password, and I don't have one. I don't know where else to click to get the laptop hooked up to my cable. Can someone please tell me what to do in order for my laptop to connect to my Comcast cable internet?

Please note that the ThinkPad doesn't have a CD drive, so I can't do the Comcast "install" disk.

  • How do I wash a jacket that I dripped gasoline on?

I bought a polyester and nylon quilted polyester-filled winter jacket with a hood a couple of years ago. (It's the standard kind of long jacket that most women wear in the cold winters.) When I was at the gas station filling up the tank, I got a drop or two of gasoline on the sleeve. I didn't know what to do about washing it, and I didn't want to mess up my washing machine, so I just let the jacket hang for a while. Two years later, I still haven't washed it, it doesn't smell so bad, and I want to wear it. What do I do? Do I soak the sleeve in something first to get the gasoline out? Or do I just throw the whole thing in the wash? I really think I should treat the one sleeve first, but I don't know how to do it without possibly fading it. Any ideas?

  • Advice on DIY hair colorings?

I've never dyed my hair before, but it's getting a little gray in it. It's dark brown. Should I just go to the store and buy something to color it with or should I go to the salon and have them do it? It'd be great to save money if I can, but I don't want to ruin the texture of my hair. Thanks for any advice!
