How do I hook up cable internet to a Windows XP laptop?
I just got a hand-me-down Win XP Lenovo ThinkPad. I plugged in the cord that goes to the cable internet (I have no wifi in the house), but I don't know what to do from there. The former owner of the laptop had set up a couple of broadband connections for his house, but when I click on "broadband" the computer asks me for my password, and I don't have one. I don't know where else to click to get the laptop hooked up to my cable. Can someone please tell me what to do in order for my laptop to connect to my Comcast cable internet?
Please note that the ThinkPad doesn't have a CD drive, so I can't do the Comcast "install" disk.
The only icon I see in the bottom right is the one telling me about the wifi signals that come into my house from the neighbors. When I try to troubleshoot, it tells me that there's a firewall that's keeping me from connecting. When I disable the firewall, it still doesn't help. I can't connect via the "broadband" function (it asks me for a password, which I don't have), I can't connect via the LAN, nor the WAN. The laptop won't make new connections. The cable modem definitely works, because I'm on it now on another computer.

if you have plugged in the ethernet cable into laptop and the other end to the router/cable box then you should see a message stating (internet or limited internet) on the bottom right
Move mouse over the small icons - one should read network
Open internet page - if its connected then you should be able to search etc
if blank page - right click the network icon and select troubleshoot
