Why did 140 Millionaires ask Congress to raise their taxes?

Nearly 140 millionaires asked a divided U.S. Congress on Wednesday to increase their taxes for the sake of the nation.

"Please do the right thing," the entrepreneurs and business leaders wrote President Barack Obama and congressional leaders, noting that they benefited from a sound economy and now want others to do so. "Raise our taxes."

The letter was signed by 138 members of "Patriotic Millionaires for Fiscal Strength." The group was created a year ago during a failed bid to persuade Congress to end tax cuts for millionaires enacted under Republican former President George W. Bush.

The group is now making the same request of a 12-member congressional "super committee," which is struggling to reach a bipartisan deal to cut the deficit by at least $1.2 trillion over the next decade in order to help put the nation on sound financial footing.

Why didn't they write a check? Leadership is doing it yourself and convincing other people to join you.

Passing a law to mandate other people do what you are not willing to do on your own is just bullying and tyranny.

Seriously, go to your mom and say "Mom, I want you to force me and my brother both to clean our rooms, if we don't then you can ground us for 10 years". Is that leadership? Is that logical, rational, or make any sense at all? Obviously not. If you want your room to be cleaned, then go clean it. If you want your brother's room to be clean, then show him how to do it, help him, lead him. Running to mommy and asking her to force him is just stupid and childish. Grow up.

This is in part due to an anomaly in how many very wealthy people make their money. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have both commented on the idiocy of their tax rate being lower than their secretaries. This is basically because Warren Buffett and Bill Gates (and many others) make much of their income through securities transactions that are subject to capital gains tax but not income tax - meaning taxed at 15% if held over a year. Their secretaries on the other hand make most of their income as fully taxable salary that is taxed at a higher rate than capital gains.

There are others who see it is being about more philosophical concerns like financially reflecting their debt to the society that enabled their wealth. Many may also have achieved some of their own success through programs that were funded by tax revenues (education, scholarships, seed funding or crisis lending for example) and paying taxes aligned with the rest of society ensures others are able to acquire the same assistance.

The millionaires know that the Democrats will never raise their taxes and if they wanted to contribute more in taxes there is nothing left to stop them. When asked individually they call refuse to contribute anything. It's all TALK with nothing to back it up. One of the things holding up the Super Committee is that the Republicans want to close the loopholes these millionaires use to avoid paying taxes. Obama and all the Congresspersons use every loophole to avoid paying 'their fair share'. GE admitted that their tax return if not filed electronically their return would consist of 57 pages. As we all know by now they paid $0 dollars in taxes. Then Obama appointed Immelt, CEO of GE as Jobs Czar and what was the first thing he did? Yes, move his factories to China. How long will this or any administration continue to pull the wool over the average citizen's eyes. These are the people who passed the laws we all must live with but they exempt themselves. The latest revelation that Inside Trading is perfectly legal for those in Congress and yet we could be sent to prison if we engaged in this practice. Nancy Pelosi, multi-millionaire, just took advantage of this, bought stock at $4.00 and it immediately skyrocketed to $8.00 per share. Pretty good investment which would be illegal for the rest of us. The deck is stacked against us unless there are term limits and those in Congress have to abide by the same laws they pass for the rest of us to follow. Another example is Obama-Care, we are all going to have to abide by a government agency instead of our doctor/patient relationship and decisions but Congress is exempt along with numerous other corporations who are already exempt. Whatever happed to 'equal justice under the law'? Only we as individual citizens can enforce term limits by voting those who have made millions and who we have their retirement, health care, etc. by making this their life career spending decades milking all of us. This should not stand. They need to serve two terms and move on to other jobs or businesses and secure their own retirements. They have become like spoiled, dictorial children who conjole their parents like these politicians conjole the electorate. Since they make the laws they will always take care

Because it's not going to hurt the 140 that already have their billions in the bank. It's going to hurt the next guy that tries to come along and challenge their share of the pie by starting up a new business. They don't want to pay more taxes or they would. They want the government to force YOU to pay more taxes.

Because they want to look good for the American People, and try to lower the current level animosity towards the wealthy. Otherwise we would have never heard about it... it's called P.R.

Because they'd apparently rather try to pay even more than they already do (the rich pay tons of taxes) rather than cutting spending. Start by cutting the wars. Legalise marijuana. Cut unnecessary extra spending attached to bills. Cut unnecessary departments.

Because taxes is not a factor for them when hiring and selling goods and services for a profit.

It looks good to the PC bigots. See my sources for where they were indoctrinated.

Source(s): For decades I studied philosophies, cultures, and social institutions. I began that because of confusion resulting from my military experience under the shadow of neo-Marxist anti-military and anti-capitalism indoctrination in the universities.
