My 3 week old seems constantly hungry?

He is eating 4-5oz every 2-3 hours and yes he is actually hungry. I check everything else first. His diaper gets changed every time he wakes up, he is rocked, cuddled, loved, cleaned, no fever just hungry! Roots for the bottle, sucks fingers, smacks lips ect. He does not spit up when i feed him at all. He has only spit up twice since we brought him home. I'm just concerend because he never seems satisfied and we have talked to doctors and they are not concerend. Hes eating 30 + oz a day easily. This just started 3 days ago by the way. What is going on? oh and his weight is 8lbs 8 oz. He was 6lb 2 oz at birth.

Update:

This is every 2 to 3 hours day and night and we do try to get him to wait a bit but he screams and screams and no amount of rocking, cuddles or distraction helps.

He is going through a growth spurt so just let him eat. It will pass in a few days. It is just his way of saying that he needs more food. If the doctor is not concerned, then just feed him.

Source(s): My son doubled his birth weight by 2 months old. He was breastfed and some days it felt like he was eating constantly and never off my breast.

He is not ready for solids. He does not need solids. He is far too young for solids. You feed your baby on demand. While you are formula feeding, remember that if you were breastfeeding, you wouldn't be able to measure ounces, and you would trust that baby is taking what he needs, when he needs it. So, with formula, you do the same. A few grains of rice cereal (all you could possibly get down him at this age) is not going to make him any less hungry, or take the place of a bottle or two of formula. You don't say how much formula he takes in all (does he sleep longer at night?) but if it's under 40-45 ounces or so a day, he's almost certainly fine. If it's more than that, you might want to look into other reasons for his crying. Are you sure he's hungry an hour after a 6 ounce bottle? (While most won't eat if not truly hungry, some babies will take bottles when offered, and drain them.) Maybe he just wants to suck? Or is gassy? Or bored? Or colicky? Or has reflux? Maybe another ounce at his 'regular' meal time would hold him longer. Nature doesn't know about rice cereal, so there is no reason that nature (which assumes that babies will survive on milk alone until they can eat 'real' food) will make a baby 'need' ground rice at such an early age.

He is going through a growth spurt and guzzling all he can get. This will pass soon and will start again soon because healthy baby's like he appears to be will have these spurts about every 36-48 hours gradually slowing down.

You don't say whether he feeds at night. If this is not so, he needs to have at least one during the Night.

As well as his growth spurt he will try to make up for any missed feeds = guzzling during the day.

Try drag his feed times past the 2 hours to 3-4 hours. His intake should be about 2.1/2 Oz's per lb body weight over 24 hours = 22 Oz's. Give or take 1-3 Oz's more or less.

Try. 5-6am 4; 10-11am-4; 2-3pm-4; 6-7pm-4; 10-11pm-4; 2-3am 4. For now. As he increases his weight then increase his milk. He should have doubled his birth weight by 6/12 of age. This is considered healthy and wont hinder his normal development. Therefore 13 lb at 6/12 would be considered excellent.

It's normal! Babies are very hungry all the time! And if everything else is ok then your baby should be just fine.
