What type of lawyer should I be?
Hey Im a sophmore in high school and trying to get my future set. I know I want to be a lawyer but Im going to the Air Force for four year then going to college to be a lawyer. I want to study medical malpractice but they make less than $100,000. I would like to make $100,000-200,000 a year. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?

Do NOT go to law school if money is your driving motivation. NO ONE IN ANY AREA OF LAW is coming out of law school making 6 figures anymore. I would not go to law school for the next 30 years, the legal job market is flooded (i graduated from a good law school almost 2 years ago and have friends that are still working at gas stations, no joke). Also note that you will need a bachelors degree prior to applying to law school, if you decide to go.

I am not sure where you heard that medical malpractice lawyers make less than $100,000. The usual fee for a medical malpractice case is 30% of the settlement if you win. Most medical malpractice suits are for millions of dollars. If only have one case a year that you win, you will be in the $300,000 range. Many lawyers work for law firms or the government for a set salary. After a few years most salaried lawyers are making over $100,000. In private law firms they often become partners in the firm and receive a part of the entire firms profit for the year. There are also corporate lawyers that are paid very well. The lawyers are that struggle the most for income are the general lawyers who handle every day legal matters like wills, divorces, and small criminal cases. Even the ambulance chasers who represent people hurt in auto accidents make 30% or more of what they collect and make a very good living. Although money is important, you should decide what type of law you would like to practice and specialize in something that interests you. If you do not do well at what ever type of law you choose you will not be employed very long. It is a very competitive career field. Best of luck The PracticaL Mentor.
