How much would a afternoon at a shooting range cost?

I intend to enlist next year in the Marines. I was told by my previous JROTC instructor that marksmanship is an important part of bootcamp and that I would greatly benefit from sometime at a shooting range. What do I need and how much generally would it cost?

Most outdoor rifle ranges usually do not rent any firearms. They will sell you targets, ammo, ear & eye protection rental, etc. but for the most part you have to bring your own rifle. Assuming you're good in that department, range fees vary by location and they will either charge you by the hour or a flat fee where you can shoot all day. The ammunition is always overpriced at the range - see if you can buy a few boxes of .223 ammo at Walmart or a gun store because you'll save a lot of money. There's a lot of unknowns here so the best thing to do is call the range you plan on visiting, or go to their web site, and get the exact fees. Basically, the more supplies you bring on your own, the less expensive it will be.

Well, you figure approximately .55 cents per round, coming in 100 round boxes, and for a full day you'll want to shoot probably 300 rounds (at least!)... so you're looking at $165 in ammo.

Then you're looking at range fees... and the range fees can run anywhere from 0 for an open, unmanaged range, up to about $20 for an hour at a nice range.

You can, however, decrease your cost by going to an online site like www.ammotogo.com and ordering your ammo wholesale before you go (although I recommend against cheap ammos... stick to Remington, Winchester, or Federal as a minimum... cheap ammos are bad for your rifle).

I know you mentioned the M16A2... but those are military rifles that you can't shoot. Do you have an AR-15 (A2 varient) that you can borrow? Most ranges don't rent out long arms... especially not the AR variety... and if they do, that'll add more to your cost.

Are we including ammo costs because then it would be all over the place. As for range fees that again varies from place to place. Here the cheapest is $7 all day at the big outdoor range while another is $20 an hour at the indoor range.

Prices vary....around here you can use a State range for $5/ day or $24 for the year....you may have a tough time finding a 300 yd. or meter range....most are 100yards........

It depends on how much shooting you plan to do.

Firing 10 shots is a lot cheaper than firing 2000 shots.
