commercial food for pets?

What kind of brand do you feed your pets and do you really know what type of meat is in it?

Wellness Core wet food and Blue Wilderness Chicken for my crunchy food addict. Both are high protein, grain free foods with no by-products. Yes, I know what is in the food my cats eat.

I don't think that most commercial pet food is bad for cats. I think most grocery store brands are nothing but junk food. But I don't think brands like Science Diet (which I currently feed) are harming the cat's long term health. Some people say they avoid things like kidney disease on a more proactive diet - I don't know if I buy it. I'm more inclined to believe that people have success avoiding or controlling diabetes on high end brands I think the biggest problem is that people (and I believe I'm guilty) overfeed their cats. I have noticed that in terms of quality of ingredients and nutritional information, Science Diet is not worth the price. After researching it, I think I'm going to switch to a similarly priced but better quality food. But it will still be a commercial brand. Just to give an example: Good foods have a higher protein content. When you compare Science Diet to other foods, its protein content is dismally low for a "quality food".

Yes, I do know is what in my pet's food because I buy only brands that tell me- and something I can theoretically eat myself.

I feed a breakfast of raw Nature's Variety Chicken and a can of Weruva. When they're done, I leave out a cup of Orijen, Blue Wilderness, Acana, Fromm's or Go! for them to eat while I'm gone for 10 hours. (I have three cats)

Dinner is a another can of Weruva, Soulistic, or Fromm's.

No one ( unless you feed a homemade diet) knows exactly whats in their pets food. I have fed commercial diets to my fur kids my whole life and the youngest any of my pets were when they passed away was 14. I have never had any serious health issues save for BG who was 14 when she died of cancer, and a rescue cat that I had for 16 years that was caught in a trap when i found her and was diabetic. She was 21 ( closer to 22) when she died.

Your pets, like you, need a well balanced diet. MOST pet foods provide this. I have gone to grain free diets as I have found that their skin and coats are healthier. Right now I feed 2 of my dogs Diamond Naturals, and one of them refuses to eat anything but Purina. My feral cats get Blue Buffalo canned and my PITA of a house cat, who will only eat dry, gets Wellness right now but has eaten EVO in the past.

This is a great article by Dr. Wexler-Mitchell regarding pet food labels:
