Rats are smarter, more playful, can be taught tricks and are generally much better pets in my opinion.
Most of the people here have had one or the other, I've had both. Guinea pigs are really cute and nice, but they don't come close to rats in intelligence. Rats behave like tiny little dogs. They will sit on your neck "bruxing" for hours at a time, grab your fingers and lick and clean them madly, play games with you, wrestle with and chase your hand, learn tricks, learn their names, and beg to get out of their cage. I have never met guinea pigs that do those things.
Guinea pigs are really cute but IMO rats make much better pets.

Rats! They are the smartest and sweetest pets ever. They have so much personality and have so much interest in their owner. Every time I walk in my room when I've been gone, they rush to the front of their cage to greet me. They can learn so much too. Their names, different tricks and to be litter trained. It's amazing, it doesn't seem like there is much of a limit to their intelligence for an animal. They're easy to care for and make the best companions. Especially when they sit on your shoulder or in your hood or pocket. That's the best feeling.
By the way, the only way that rats can be called smelly is when their owners don't regularly and properly clean their cages. Just sayin'.

My brother used to have a rat, which he LOVED. I had two guinea pigs which i loved as well. Rats are more personable, and they need a LOT of attention. I loved my piggies but they are a LOT of work. They need constant care- hay, water, food, changing the bedding, attention, excercise, etc.. they also need a very large space (which many piggy owners do not realize) I think rats are easier, but probably smell much more like urine... but they are very friendly and loving :)

I like guinea pigs a lot better because they're sweet, cuddly, and cute. On the other hand, rats tend to bite, and are more skiddish. Bottom line, I like guinea pigs better.

I'd say they're about the same. Guinea pigs sit still for you to pet them more though. Rats kind of wiggle around.

i personally like rabits better. they dont smell as bad and dont make a lot of noise like guinea pigs tend to do. rats are good pets as well tho. they may smell a little but its easily fixable. they are generally pretty quiet. not generally known as the nicest animals but im sure the pet store cound find you a very nice playful rat :)

guinea pigs are the best..rats are really smelly! guinea pigs actually can learn their names mine know their names, and they are intelligent, they know where i keep their food and they call for it everytime i open my cupboard door, when they have floor time they stand by my door and call for me if im not in my room, i have a door on my cage and everytime they hear me open the lock they come running..so there you go their smart, atleast their cute and don't stink
rats are discusting, they stink so bad it will reak your house out, their ugly, their tails make me sick, they dont live long, they are pest, they live in sewers..they are just plain right ugly, oh yeah and they eat meat!! so their piss and shyt would stink too, guinea pigs just eat veggies hay and pellets so they dont stink like discusting rats...and guinea pigs can sit on your sholder too, rats arn't intelligent for sitting on you, ppft..
