Is it ok to get someone to weld the drivers seat frame after it has snapped?
Part of the frame under our drivers seat snapped today whilst my partner was driving and now the seat rocks right back.
Is it acceptable to try and take the seat off and get someone to weld the frame or is it a job that needs to be done by a professional?

You might get the parts to repair your seat from a salvage yard cheaper than it would cost to have it welded.
As long as the welder knows what he is doing you will be fine with no safety concerns whatsoever. The reason I say this is the majority of the body on every car out there is welded together, either the nuts or the bolts that hold the seat to the car are welded there from the factory, and a good quality weld will be stronger than the metal was to begin with.
Keep in mind though that if the piece is rusted or otherwise weakened, the part may break again in another location.

If it's a luxury car with motors and stuff in the seats, you might want to take it to a dealer. And there might be some safety laws regarding car seats. But otherwise, if the car is out of warranty and you know someone willing to do the job, you may as well try. Worst case, you could buy another seat from a junkyard.

The difficult part will be dealing with the seat belt buckle and the seat belt pretensioner that works with the airbag and then removing all the seat cover to allow it to be welded without setting it all on fire. Then getting the upholstery back on again - nightmare.
Think about those things before you decide who and what to do

As long as it is welded correctly it will be O.K.
BUT If it is the anchorages that need welding rather than just the seat frame then it should be checked by a MOT garage, to be on the safe side

Welders are professionals. Also check your local auto junk yards for seat parts. For example in the USA we have http://www.car-parts.com/

Fix it however you can just be wise and know that it might fail in a crash and cause complicating injuries that would not be present if it was in original condition.
