Can anyone help me fix a deadbolt lock?

My back door is a big, glass monstrosity with a built-in deadbolt. To open the deadbolt you have to unlock the door and push the handle down. It doesn't do anything until the handle is pushed down. Well, I was trying to lock it after bringing the dog in and felt something slip. I opened the door and worked the lock to see if there was something amiss and now the deadbolt is stuck. With the door open. So I can't shut my back door at all. I took the handle off but don't see anything that could help me with it. Any suggestions?

Look in the corner of the glass to see if there is a small etched A/W on the glass. If so it is an Andersen door, then you can go to www.andersen.com for help with this problem. If it doesn't have the logo, it could be a Pella door, and their ID would be on the metal strip inside the glass. Then you could go to www.pella.com for their help. If you see neither of the ID markers it could be an off brand. Spray some WD-40 into the lock mechanism and physically push it in and out or up and down until it releases. If that doesn't work, unscrew the screws, remove the handle assembly, and then try to move the latch. The LAST thing to try with the handle assembly out is to GENTLY tap the parts with a hammer ...GENTLY, only trying to get the thing moving not bend it.

Did you try oiling the lock. After all it is 12 years old and it could be worn. And it is possable that the alinement is off by the slitest bit causing it to bind.
