Why is global warming bad?

The global population is higher than ever. Wouldn't it be more detrimental to the environment and humankind for this pleasant warm spell to suddenly reverse?

It's not bad, historically warmer periods have been far more productive and prosperous than cold periods. But warm or cold, it's not human caused and we simply need to adapt to whatever nature brings.

The fact is that "global warming" as we use it make people believe that the only effect of it is warming of the earth. That's why "climate change" would more appropriate, because the is a lot more consequences that could rise from this. ( More hurricanes or others extreme temperature or natural phenomenon...). The melting of the ice caps could also change the dynamics of the ocean, because of the large output of fresh water. This could stop all the currents in the ocean, stopping by the same time the exchanges of heat from equator to the poles. That could result in an ice age on each pole while the equator would litteraly boil under the sun...

But the fact is we don't really know what will be the real long-term effects of this, but we're already seeing change (the melting of the ice caps for example), so those who still say in 2011 that Climate changes aren't cause by human are just retarded....

No, not at all. Yes, for a short time we will be enjoying warm weather, and the beach. But soon, the glaciers will fully melt. They are melting as I type this. The amount of water that will be released is HUGE. You say that with global population at an all time high, warm weather would be good. But consider this, if all of the glaciers melt, sea level rises. A lot. When sea level rises, continents shrink. When continents shrink, there is less room for development. With less room for development, city's get crammed. When cities get crammed, disease spreads and people die, bringing mankind to an end. Needless to say, in the long run, the warm weather just doesn't seem so cozy.

Most people live in the tropics, where it is already warm enough all year. In addition, rising temperature will melt the ice in Antarctica and Greenland, causing sea levels to rise, flooding millions of square miles of farmland and the homes of hundreds of millions of people.

Global warming will not reverse itself if we convert to solar, wind and nuclear power, because the carbon dioxide which we have added to the atmosphere will remain there for centuries. Besides, even if we were to stop adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere today, scientists believe that the Earth will still warm by 0.6 degrees C.

This figure is based on climate models, so the actual warming in the pipeline could be less or more than 0.6 degrees C.

There is NO such thing as global warming. Try this video and then make a comment!

This is a video made in simple terms so even a progressive/liberal can understand. Then again, maybe not!

pleasant warm spell? ask again during a heat wave and drought.

it's not about temperatures as much as changes- changes in precipitation patterns, sea levels, melting permafrost and glaciers.

the billions spent on extreme weather disasters are not pleasant.

There are better ways to help with the over population problem than to flood the earth. Also it is bad because many other animals and habitats would be destroyed along with humankind.

Global warming is the nightmare of earth. Its human who is being blamed and their activity . gobal warming is considered as the depeletion of weather ,environment and can cause human civilization to cause a hazard.it cause the ozone layer to loos its thickness which can affect the whole human being from receiving harmful ultra violent rays . human are considered as the main cause of gobal warming . more the people more the consumption of harmful gases. Global warming refers to the rising average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans and its projected continuation. In the last 100 years, Earth's average surface temperature increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F) with about two thirds of the increase occurring over just the last three decades.[2] Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and scientists are more than 90% certain most of it is caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as deforestation and burning fossil fuel.[3][4][5][6] These findings are recognized by the national science academies of all the major industrialized countries.[7][A]

Climate model projections are summarized in the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). They indicate that during the 21st century the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 1.1 to 2.9 °C (2 to 5.2 °F) for their lowest emissions scenario and 2.4 to 6.4 °C (4.3 to 11.5 °F) for their highest.[8] The ranges of these estimates arise from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations.[9][10]

An increase in global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation, and a probable expansion of subtropical deserts.[11] Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic and would be associated with continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice. Other likely effects of the warming include more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events including heatwaves, droughts and heavy rainfall events, species extinctions due to shifting temperature regimes, and changes in agricultural yields. Warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe, with projections being more robust in some areas than others[12]. In a 4 °C world, the limits for human adaptation are likely to be exceeded in many parts of the world, while the limits for adaptation for natural systems would largely be exceeded throughout the world. Hence, the ecosystem services upon which human livelihoods depend would not be preserved.[13]

Proposed responses to global warming include mitigation to reduce emissions, adaptation to the effects of global warming, and geoengineering to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere or reflect incoming solar radiation back to space. The primary international effort to prevent dangerous anthropogenic climate change ("mitigation") is coordinated by the 194-nation UNFCCC.[14] The Kyoto Protocol is their only legally binding emissions agreement and only limits emissions through the year 2012.[15] Afghanistan and the USA are the only nations in the UNFCCC that have not ratified the original protocol,[16] and as of October 2011 several others have refused to extend the emissions limits beyond 2012.[17] Nonetheless, in the 2010 Cancun Agreements, member nations agreed that urgent action is needed to limit global warming to no more than 2.0 °C (3.6 °F) above pre-industrial levels.[18][B] Current scientific evidence, however, suggests that 2°C is the "threshold between ‘dangerous’ and ‘extremely dangerous’ climate change",[19] that this much warming is possible during the lifetimes of people living today,[20] and that steep reductions in global emissions must be made by 2020 in order to have a 2-out-of-3 chance of avoiding global warming in excess of 2°C.[21]

GLOBAL WARMING IS VERY VERY VERY BAD!

animals in the arctic are dying constantly because there homes are melting.

coral reefs are bleaching because of water temperture change

the air quality is becoming horrible and people are dying at constant rates

you should conserve water, gas, and energy to stop this horrific epidemic,

    also RECYCLE, RECYCLE, RECYCLE!

    Its awful...

But look at the bright side..

If you pay Al Gore carbon tax money he will wave his magic wand and fix everything.
