What is a historical/modern example of oppression (in any country)?

I assume since you posted this in government/politics you are looking for an answer that relates to that. Hitler sending the Jewish to concentration camps - causing them to go into hiding and fear for their lives is an example of oppression. A more recent example would be the Taliban forbidding girls/women from attending school - those seen attempting it had things happen like having acid thrown in their faces. Again - this causes fear or a need to hide (or hide what one is doing) - both of which suggest extreme oppression.
