What is the penalty of sin?

In my previous questions, TLS showed that God can not and will not tolerate sin. Then no1home2day added that there is absolutely nothing we can do on our own to atone for or remove our sins. So the next question is what penalty will we face for our sins? Is there a way to reduce the sentence? Will we be eligible for parole? How do we pay for our sin?

As before, please answer the opening question. The others are rhetorical but feel free to answer them as well if you wish.

Update:

Kelly: what do you have against no1home2day? His answer was reasonable and well written.

Update 2:

David A: Thanks for the lesson in Judaism. Very interesting.

Update 3:

Chris if you want to know what the motivation is for these questions, stay tuned. You might benefit from it.

Your first mistake is in assuming that God can do anything. He can't. God can never act contrary to His nature. In all His actions, no matter what they are, God is always and will always act like God. God can not tolerate sin because God can not be unrighteous. Omnipotence is a bit of a misleading term. There is nothing that is beyond God's will, but there are some things that are not within God's will. God can not err or be unholy. God can not do evil or commit sin. If you put your mind to it, I am sure you can think of a few more. It is not a limitation on His ability to do something, it is a state that is contradictory to His nature which prevents it from happening. Since God is perfect, He must be true to His nature at all times. As for belittling......I am not aware of any such action. Just as in this post, I am responding to an attack, not initiat

After death, the soul and spirit will go to hell (the underworld). After the resurrection of the body, the person will be sentenced for his sin and then thrown into the Lake of Fire to suffer the punishment.

The only way to avoid this is to receive a pardon from God. We can't do anything to earn it. We can only ask for a free gift.

Upon reviewing the previous question answered by TLS, I have to wonder why you're bothering to ask the question. You choose the answer that you obviously already agreed with in advance, and got on a soapbox and belittled the others. If you already know the answer, why ask the question?

First of all, to say that "God CAN NOT and will not tolerate sin" is ludicrous. God is omniscient and omnipotent, and can do whatever He pleases, including tolerating sin if He chooses to do that. So although you can make an argument that God WILL NOT tolerate sin, it is in fact insulting God to state that He has no choice in the matter, as if He's prohibited by some higher authority (His wife, perhaps?) from tolerating sin.

As for the penalty for sin, that's pretty clear. "The wages of sin is death," after all, and that is generally accepted to mean eternal, spiritual death. Whether you buy into the idea of a literal Hell, with the fire and brimstone and gnashing of teeth and all that, or you interpret Hell as simple spiritual non-existence, it's spelled out pretty clearly that non-repentant sinners won't get to enjoy eternal spiritual life in the presence of God.

The other questions all seem to allude to the Catholic idea of Purgatory, which I've always found to be patently stupid. Essentially, if you're *really* bad, you go to Hell; do not pass Go, do not collect $200 or a pair of angel wings. If you're just *sort of* bad, you go to Purgatory, where you have to work off your sins in some unspecified manner until you eventually gain admittance to Heaven. Of course, it speeds up the process and reduces your "sin debt" if the faithful on Earth pray for the repose of your soul, which many Catholic churches will be happy to do in exchange for obedience and monetary donations. It all seems rather business-like to me.

We were all born sinners. God is aware of that. He does freely forgive us of our sins when we have truly repent from the wrongdoing. It says that in the Bible.

" Continue putting up with one another and forgiving one another freely if anyone has a cause for complaint against another. Even as Jehovah freely forgave YOU,so do YOU also."-Colossians 3:13

When people pray, they always ask for God for forgiveness of their sins.

But the "wages sin pays is death."

" For the wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord."-Romans 6:23

When an individual dies he has paid for his sins.

Explaining how the first man's actions affected his offspring, the Bible says: "That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned." This clearly shows that death came as a punishment for disobebedience to God the Creator. Disobedience to God is sin. And, "the wages sin pays is death." Romans 5:12; Romans 6:23.

The ransom became necessary because of the sin of Adam. By disobeying God, Adam bequeathed to his offspring a legacy of sickness, sorrow, pain, and death. (Genesis 2:17; Romans 8:20) God could not yield to sentiment and simply commute the death sentence. To do so would be to ignore his own law: "The wages sin pays is death." (Romans 6:23) And were Jehovah to invalidate his own standards of justice, then universal chaos and lawlessness would reign.

In Judaism there are ten days for atonement, the Days of Awe. During that time your can ask forgiveness for wrongs you have done to others....directly to them. But you cannot cast off the sin of, say, murder. There is no confessional, no absolution, no Hail Mary's or saying the rosary twenty times. You live with your sins till you die. But God judges what is in your heart and soul as well as what you may have done. On the plus side, there's always a place reserved for you in the world-to-come.

The penalty for sin is death ~ both physical and spiritual.

It is paid when you die, and you'll continue to pay for all eternity. That's how great the debt is.

There is no way to reduce the sentence, but there is a way to escape it altogether. Put your faith in Christ and accept His payment for your sins.

A Cardinal sin , you go to hell for a period of time , and will be eligible for a transfer to heaven. A mortal sin , and you are subject to eternal damnation unless you ask for forgiveness. Forgiveness can be granted only by the Christian God

It is all human language. God is Eternal, All His attributes are then eternal. He is Love and Mercy for ever. God does not change His mood like man. Even in sin He loves us. They why do we speak about punishment? Well . Fire is fire you know very well. Fire is Good. But when you Go near the fire it will burn you. To withstand with God you should come to that level and the life will prepare you. The penalty of sin is a consequence of sin " ipso facto." When you go under the rain you will be wet. But with God there is forgiveness. He is merciful. But man has to make available for himself that forgiveness. He must desire for it and ask pardon. Miserable sinners as we are, we can never pay for our sins, but Christ has atoned for our sins. Man has to recognise his sins , repent and ask pardon.

Eternal life doesn't exist so when you are deadyou don't have to worry about the cost of sins ...the only thing you need to concentrate on is what isright here and now
