Personally I've pretty much given up on the whole thing, being old enough to remember when Christmas started with the decorating of the tree *on Christmas Eve*.
Starting to be commercially exploited by late September (earlier in central London department stores) doesn't really appeal as a festival or celebration.
edit: ah, found an article on what you are talking about. (it wasn't big news in rural Cornwall)
I have no trouble with Christmas being called Christmas, or I'd have to object to Thursdays, too. And July, and...

People can call their tree whatever they want. I can't image bring so insecure about wanting everyone to pay lip service to a religion you'd be upset if someone calls it their holiday tree. Particularly as Christians coopted decorating with greens in winter from pre-existing beliefs and just modified it to fit their own beliefs.
