Do you think the character Mr. Popo was a racist drawing?

I have wondered about this for a while. In Dragonball and DBZ, there is a servant named Mr. Popo who works with Kami who is black and is drawn similarly to the 1920's depiction of black people. In Dragonball Z Kai, they change his color to blue instead of black.

Was this racism?

I don't think so. He's an alien. Can't aliens be black much like how we see white and green aliens in DB? Heck, DB has a ton of weird looking creations in it. Was Popo not portrayed in the anime as an honorable, noble, respectable being? He trained Goku, Tien, Krillin, Yamacha, Chiatzu, and Yajirobi. He was the only guy aside form Korin(sort of) to serve the God of the Earth. He has enough power to bust the moon and managed to collect the Dragon Balls in a day(first person to do so).

And, DBZ Kai was dubbed by 4-Kids which is why they changed him to blue. 4-Kids f*cked up a lot of things in dubbing, I'm sure you've heard the countless pages of terrible changes. 4-Kids thinks everything is racist and wrong with anime. Like in Mew Mew Power (Tokyo Mew Mew) how the main girl couldn't possibly be eating a bento so they had her say "what a delicious pizza" as she's eating rice with chopsticks. >_>

I think he is a genie that is based on black stereotypes. Other black people on the show look relatively normal. So either Mr popo is a genie who looks accidentally racist or he's a joke on black face, the same way krillin is a joke on chinese people. Either way its the character's personality not appearance

    No...

There are other black (and I use this as a loose term because they were from different nationalities) characters in the original Dragon Ball (you know, the one before Dragon Ball Z which often is overlooked for some reason) but it is not used as a racist depiction. There are many characters of many different colors in the story.

Now coloring Mr. Popo blue was racist. It draws more attention to his color than his original rendering and it basically is a statement that no character can look like that because the people who made that decision have that in their minds as their first thought when it comes to Mr. Popo.

Yes. The japanese don't care about any race other than their own. They've done terrible things to the chinese and yes I know that was the past but that hate still lingers amongst some chinese people. Also they never changed him blue. I watched it a week or so ago and he was still black.

No, in fact i only saw popo as a black genie and nothing more.

Years later, C( retarded as hell)W4kids turned him blue, BLUE! I mean COME ON! I tolerated jinx (pokemon) turning from black to purple.

Yeah I hate the dubbed version. In the original DBZ there were tons of sex scenes and gore... Bet many of you never even seen the episode where the old pedophile hermit rapes young goku...

Source(s): It was KAMA HAME RAPE

I doubt Akira Toriyama meant to insult anyone. When you get down to it, you can find racism in ANYTHING if you're looking for it.

He's black, big deal. How is it racist? I don't get why people are saying it's racist.

Yes. Simply, yes. Many people think they are being funny when they are being insensitive. I was told the responsible people thought they were being funny and acknowledged they were insensitive. They were wrong.
