If your pregnant are you allowed to smoke?

Obviously you shouldn't smoke if you are pregnant, but is it against the law to smoke if you are pregnant?

It definitely should be. I was a heavy smoker before I got pregnant. As soon as I found out, I quit cold turkey and didn't even let it phase me. I won't even stand around people who smoke, which is difficult because I take the bus everywhere and for some reason people think just because youre outside it's ok to sit right next to someone and light up a cigarette and blow smoke toward them! If you dont care about yourself, thats one thing, but your baby doesn't have a.choice but to sit in his tar filled womb while you increase his risk of being born prematurely or born with a mental illness. You can stop if you really want to. It should be considered child abuse and should be illegal just like doing drugs!!

It looks like it is not illegal, but is being petitioned by some organizations to become that way. Obviously it is extremely frowned upon in our society and can cause complications such as low birth weight.

However, (and everyone may not agree with this) if you smoked prior to your pregnancy, unless you are an extraordinarily strong and determined person, quitting can often cause extreme stress to your expecting body. Stress while pregnant is generally bad and cause even more complications that affect you and your baby still. I have heard of people "weening" themselves off of cigarettes and limiting the amount they let into their body, eventually growing strong to quit completely without stressing themselves or the baby out.

Doctors often suggest keeping up your normal routine once you find out you are pregnant (with exceptions of course) because you can shock your body and cause problems. For instance, if you are a runner pre-pregnancy, its still healthy for you to run once you become pregnant.

Smoking while pregnant is not healthy, however quitting completely all at once can do damage as well. Talk to your doctor about a healthy, safe way to quit without doing a whole lot of damage to either one of you.

People should be able to do what they want to as long as it doesn't effect another. I don't wanna pay for future medical problems when a legal crack baby is born. People should have enough education on how the body works before allowing things inside of them. Unless a woman wants to risk a "special" child, they need to stop thinking about themselves, and start thinking about the child growing. Party time is over. You are eating and drinking for more than yourself. If this is understood, and practiced on their own, there is no need to force it.

I don't think it's against the law, but some technicality somewhere might deem it as child abuse, which is against the law.

not against the law but scorned highly against. your baby is defenseless at the assault you will be dealing. it does damage and causes risks for more complications. its bad enough that your worried through the whole first year

It is not against the law.

If it were, how would it be enforced? Have the police inside your house 24/7?

It's not against the law, but it should be.
