Would you really avoid High Street chain restaurants at all costs?

Almost every major metropolis along with their outlying areas (suburbs) has nationwide chain restaurants (aka High Street chains). Do you think they're generic, soulless, passionless or even uninspiring?

In economically challenging times, it's mostly the private restaurants that suffer from the lower profits; whereas these High St. chains, which likely have a parental firm have the money to pull all sorts of marketing ploys and strategies.

Would you rather eat at a private restaurant that does charge you just slightly more than those High St. offerings? Provided that they're both have the same quality of food, service, have inviting atmosphere and in the same boat with overall hygiene & sanitation?

As a rule I don't go to them as they are not really value for money and the quality is pretty crappy.

You may pay a bit more for the Burger or a piece of deep fried chicken at your chippie, but it is made right in front of you, it will be hot, possibly too hot and you will chat with the owner operator even if it is how was your day, nice weather or whatever, and Thank you as you take your food.

I think it is they care for you and not "There. $4.99 (no please or thank you) next wotcha want ?(bad mannered in our English)

I NEVER eat at chains, with the exception of Portillos and Panera. I love the privately owned places, have discovered some amazing places with great food, service and atmosphere. We live in a small town south of Chicago, IL USA, and have a lot of small business here- and I would rather give my money to them whenever possible.

We've tried Applebees, Uno's, etc, but my boyfriend always complained afterwards that he didn't like the food. And thrust me, he's just NOT THAT PICKY.

Oh, we were on a Lonestar kick for awhile, but only because of their loaded baked sweet potato, but then I realized I could make them at home (duh).
