Psychiatric testing of goldfish is still in its infancy, and we have no way of knowing what goldfish are really thinking, but I doubt that a single goldfish in a tank feels lonely. They certainly don't die of loneliness. Some of the longest-lived goldfish on record were kept alone in their tanks.
P.S. There is absolutely no truth to the ridiculous legend that goldfish (or any other fish) can remember things for no more than a few seconds. Think about it. How could a fish even swim from one end of tank to another if this were true?
Goldfish aren't exactly brilliant by our standards, but what they know, they can remember for months or years.
A 5-gallon tank? That's too small for even one goldfish, especially a Comet (comets get quite big). Absolutely do not get any more fish until you get a bigger tank.

No goldfish are just fine on their own. He/she will appreciate better water quality more than adding another fish to pollute the water. Also, many people say that 10 gallons is fine for goldfish, but because of their size and waste amount, they really need at least 30 gallons per fish with excellent filtration. Even that, IMO, is not enough. Remember that goldfish get at least 6 inches, while most get around 12 inches.

Goldfish are school fish and like having friends. However, they require a lot of space so if you get more you will definitely need that bigger tank. Also treat the water for diseases. Goldfish are kept in really unclean conditions so they are basically fatally ill when you buy them. That's why they die off so quickly. It has nothing to do with loneliness.

Ummm... goldfish can have a memory span of up to 3 months. :( Studies show that they remember AND react to past painful experiences up to two weeks afterwards. That's not indicative of an absent-minded creature. Also, they are shoaling fish. Which means that they prefer to be in groups for social purposes. So I would replace the other two fish that you lost.

Goldfish can live alone, but they certainly seem to enjoy the company of others. I notice a huge difference in behavior when a goldfish is alone as compared to when they have "buddies". And they are much more active when they are not alone. They hang out together etc.

No they dont get lonely. They can lead long and healthy lives by themselves. A 5 gallon tank is much too small for a goldie though.

Yes goldfish are very social and Switzerland has even passed a law making it illegal to keep them alone.
