computer processing time?
I run a small business and last week the financial folks were doing some year end work. We use peachtree accounting software. When the year end process is run a message pops up that says the process will take several hours. Start the process; sure enough it takes forever.
About 15 years ago i had a brand new pentium 133Mhz computer.. at the time it was the fastest thing around. Back then it took maybe 60 seconds to boot and generally software to accomplish the same types of tasks took about the same amount of time it does now.
Today i have an office full of computers that have Quad processors 2Ghz, huge hard drives and all sorts of fancy features. Why does doing the exact same type of computing today take the same or more time that it did 15 years ago?? The expected responce would be that computers do so much more than they did 15 years ago... It still takes 60 secods or more to boot.. and even longer to do year end books... its nothing but a simple database. What gives?

Because, as the hardware upgrades so do what it's required to do. Try getting the PC to run the exact same software and programs on that 15 year old computer and I guarenttee the computers today would BLAST through it.
It's a ratio type thing. Like hard drives. Back in the day we had 60GB hard drives, but our videos only took up 500MB each. Today we need a 1TB hard drive, because the quality of our videos have gotten better and require more space, so instead of being 500MB each they're now like 8.3GB big. If you didn't get the ratio difference:
you can store 120 videos on the 60GB hard drives
likewise
you can store 120 videos on the 1TB hard drive as well.
Like I said, though our hardware has gotten better our software and what the hardware is required to do now has gotten more demanding as well.

What about the Operating System ?
As an example;
Windows XP requires 256 RAM to run.
Windows 7 requires 2GB of RAM.
Processing power is similar difference.
