Why is there always a "confirm email address" when filling out things online?

Every website you go to wants you to confirm your email when filling out a form or something. Is there a reason for this?

These sites use a simple script that checks the first e-mail you entered, against the second, or "confirmation" email and makes sure the two match exactly. This way if you mis-typed one, it forces you to double check what you entered. Just a way to make sure your e-mail address was entered correct. If they didn't do this, and you accidentally fat-fingered an entry, they would not have your correct address to send communication (including signup confirmation emails) to.

Because, you wouldn't want someone using your email to fill out forms and things that you did not approve. It prevents people from using fake contact information.

Helps prevent duplicate accounts and adds some accountability to the account.
