Does the "turkey baster" method really work?

The Turkey Baster Method is the most common way of artificial insemination to get pregnant and have an artificial insemination at home. More often than not you do NOT actually use a turkey baster but a disposable syringe.

You need the following supplies for an artificial insemination at home with a turkey baster:

1.Needleless syringe or oral medicine syringe (instead of the turkey baster)

2.Collection cup, baggy or condom

3.(Optional) Saline without additives or preservatives

4.(Optional) Tube to attach to syringe

5.(Optional) Mild germicidal soap

You can ask your doctor for a needleless syringe or you can buy an oral medicine syringe at just about any drugstore or in Wal*Mart near the children's thermometers. Buy the syringe with a plunger, not a bulb end (not the mini turkey baster!). The syringes work pretty much the same way. One that is maybe 4 inches long, or longer, is probably best. The oral medicine syringes have about a half inch narrow tip on the end. You can attach a catheter (thin tube) to either kind of syringe but you don't need to and it may waste more of the semen to use one.

a) Take a clean or sterile glass or plastic cup, baggy, or collection condom and have the male ejaculate into it. You'll probably have better luck getting the semen out of a cup since you could suck the baggy or condom up to the syringe and block the opening, but you may get a larger sample with the baggy or condom. You can use a tiny bit of saline, without additives/preservatives, to help get as much sperm as possible into the syringe, but you don't need to worry too much about leaving a little behind. If you are using frozen sperm, you need to ask the sperm bank for directions on thawing.

Turkey Baster Insemination

Sure it does. Your body doesn't care how the sperm gets in there. Just make sure the sperm is fresh, and do get the friend's sperm tested before you try just to make sure there's no problem.

Another alternative method is to have the friend ejaculate into an Instead Softcup and inserting the cup into your vagina.

About the non-sterile instruments: unless you usually sterilise your husband's penis before sex, I wouldn't worry too much about a clean turkey baster.

If I were doing something so important (creating a human life) I would want to make sure I did everything safely to give that child the best chance of being healthy. If that means spending $1,000 on an IUI cycle, so be it.

Could the turkey baster method work? Yeah, but it could also cause cervical infection by introducing non sterile instruments into the vagina. Leave it to the experts, you don't know what you are doing.

You do realize that you are going though a lot of bother for what amounts to nothing more than vanity? They say most people would not have children if they took the time to think about it. You have an opportunity to think about it. Why not do so? Then you may come to the realization that making babies is a major waste of resources.

Get the instead cups. They sell them with the tampons and pads. Have him ejaculate into that, insert it into you, and get yourself to orgasm so your cervix will push the sperm up into you uterus. The instead cups are a alternative to a pad/tampon, but work incredibly well for ttc.
