Ideas for quick car with cheap insurance?
I'm 21 and looking to get a new car that's both fast and cheapish to insure. I have 2 years NCB, with a clean license and I've never crashed. I have looked at some hot hatches and fast saloons. I was surprised to find that insurance for a Golf GTi was more than for a C32 AMG, a 180mph car with 150bhp more! I'm tempted by the AMG, but servicing might suck my wallet dry... Are there any other options?
Looking for 0-60 around 5 - 6s, good mid range power, 5 seats, and economy at least in the 20s
thanks vincent for being the only person to actually answer my question, rather than pointing out hings and suggesting i move house(!) and for the record, I am a good driver, i don't speed and always keep my distance. My grandad was a member of the IAM and he taught me a great many things, and I have every intention of joining myself. So please, suggest cars like I asked...
honestly, what aren't people getting about the question... give me car ideas!
and the cheapest quote i got for the amg was just under £1200, the golf was £1800

The Mazdaspeed series have had low insurance quotes for me. I have looked into the speed3 and speed6 but not the Miata speed.
Try checking those out.

Move to a cheaper area. For my daughter to insure my car would cost her £1400 at my address and £6400 at her address. I pay £180 :)
Insurance is based on many things. A young male driver in a hot hatch is, statistically, bad news. Ask yourself why you want a car with this kind of performance and think where you would use it and you will maybe appreciate why it would have a loaded premium.
I am not saying that you are a bad driver, but may I politely suggest that you improve your driving skills and buy a standard car, the reasons being that road planning has far more to do with making good progress than fast acceleration and high top speed. With proper observation you will find that planning will allow you to maintain your progress without excessive fuel and mechanical costs and at a far lower premium.
I suggest that you contact the Institute of Advanced Motorists and see what's on offer. It isn't just old buggers with pork pie hats and grand-dad cars. You can improve your skills and through IAM Surety get very competitive insurance quotes. My elder daughter was quoted a best price of a touch over £800 for her car. Because I am an IAM member and through Surety she got her insurance for £570, quite a saving!

You are looking for something that doesn't exist. Any car (Caterham included) with that kind of 0-60 time will have a massive insurance premium for your age and experience. Why were you looking at a Golf GTi? nowhere near a sub-6 second 0-60 time!! LIKE I SAID - for YOUR criteria, you are asking for suggestions that simply do not exist. None of the cars that Vincent suggests, have a sub 6-second 0-60 time - easy to check that out yourself, if you don't believe me just Google it! I could give you a suggestion of a Vauxhall Monaro VXR - sub 0-60 and most other cars will be in your rear view mirror - BUT the insurance is high - hence it does NOT fully fit your criteria! Point made, I think...........What don't you get about the fact that people aren't giving you suggestions, because there are no cars that fit your criteria?

What's your budget? When it comes to insurance you have to factor in the type of people who buy a particular car. The Merc AMG may cost less in insurance because not many boy/girl racers would buy one compared to a Golf GTI.
You can pick up a Renaultsport Clio 197 for around 5/6k or a Vectra/Astra SRI. You could even stretch to a VXr if you wanted a sportier version.

No chance.
Once you start getting some quotes you'll see for yourself, but there's no way a 21 year old will get insurance for the sort of cars you're talking about unless you've got several tens of thousands to spend.
The fact your grandad is a member of the IAM won't cut it for an insurance company by the way.....

sounds like the limiter is the insurance. why not go on their sites and see what cars cost what. i believe they list which cars in in, for instance, group 12. and they are all different. a golf gti might be group 8 in one and group 21 in another. how about a classic car? jag e type being favourite

Cheap insurance is a thing of the past. Quotations will confirm.

and of direction that doesn't be "fronting" might it, i.e. illegally being down as a named driving force yet in actuality being the main driving force. this is quite insurance fraud and the insurance firms are very clever to that.
