Marine Corps Reserve Pay- Can unit do this?
My buddy in my former Marine Corps Reserve unit called me and told me of this situation:
The Marine Corps Reserve recently held their annual ball, and forced the Marines in the unit to go and pay for their tickets, which actually costs more than they would make for a MUTA1 (This sucks, but this is traditional and not what I am bitching about). Now, the unit is saying they are not paying the Marines to attend the ball, which the unit ordered the Marines to go to. The unit says it is an MCO (Marine Corps Order), but I know it is not.
I know this is not legal. I was wondering if someone could provide an MCO. I am looking through MCO P1001R right now, but not finding much. I know it is illegal for a commander to order a Marine Reservist to be somewhere without paying them. Does anyone have any suggestions?

That happens Marine Corps wide, active and reserve. Your command orders you to buy a ticket to attend to show unit cohesion. There is no MCO except that if the Marine disobeys he can be charged with 'disobeying a direct order' and 'conduct unbecoming'...and if he's a lower ranking Marine, the command will get away with it. The best thing to do is to buy the damn ticket and show up--if he whines about it or goes for legal help he's going to bring down the whole weight of the command on him....his gunny's, first sgts, Lt's and other officers and sh*t will hit the fan. Every Ball I went to was an absolute drunken blast, I honestly don't know why Marines would b*tch about going!

You buy the ticket and go
While technically not legal, its a fact of life.
But the cost of NOT going along, is more than the cost of actually going.
2. You will find, its the same in the civilian world also, you are told you must go to the company x-mas party or to this event or that event
3. You could not attend, nothing officially would happen to you.
But then you would not be promoted, never get to attend any schools, being given every crap job that comes up
And even worse, they would nail you for every single nitpicking violation that you do.
4. So take your choice
go to the Ball
or be prepared to eventually get kicked out of the reserves
