I wondered the same thing. How did we go from Jesus Christ to a fat man in red, lights, trees, elves and toys. If you goto Wal-Mart, there's not one ordainment that has to do with Jesus Christ and that's what Christmas is all about.
Its no wonder people don't believe in God when they grow up, they're used to getting lied to so why trust what anyone says right?

It's a childhood fantasy. It's expected to be nothing more than a childhood fantasy. No one expects that a child is going to grow up and STILL believe in Santa as an adult. No one expects that you're going to grow up to worship Santa. No one has ever gone to war over Santa, or denied people rights based on Santa.
Sure, it's a lie. But there are some lies in this world that ARE OK to tell. The lie about Santa never hurt a single person. No child has ever stopped "trusting" their parents when they got old enough to figure out that Santa isn't real. Any sane child by that time knows that it was something that was done in fun...a harmless childhood fantasy.

I've vowed to never tell my children lies about Santa, The Easter Bunny or the biggest lie of all Jesus it just seems silly to lie to a child to get them to behave for a few weeks

It is not a lie; it is a myth.
Do you think ancient Greek kids went to therapy because Pandora wasn't real?
Or that Native American kids come home one say and say to their mom, "You mean, the crow and the fox never really had that conversation???!!! I hate you, you liar!!!"
Myths are a way of transmitting values, morals and collective experiences that unite a culture... it's practically a right of passage... they don't have to be literally fact.
You really should read some Joseph Campbell-- The Power of Myth.
Some sociologists believe a lack of myth is part of the reason why so many people in modern American society feel so disjointed, unconnected, like no one understands them and why they sit around wondering what is the meaning to their lives.
We don't need fewer myths... we need more.

Because the truth hurts little children. They need something imaginary to keep them safe, secure in the knowledge that someone cares about them. Then they grow up and become delusional and misguided adults.
Did you know that the word Santa is an anagram for Satan?

some people say its to create fun for the children.. but its a stupid idea.. why buy presents and give credit to someone that doesnt exist for it...
yeh right.. in a world with 7 billion people.. santa makes present for them all... thats 19178082 presnts a day including work on christmas day and ontop of all that.. that 1 present per person and delievers them all 7 billion presents in 1 night...
screams bulls_it doesnt it?

Because their children will eventually figure it out. Their parents will show pride in their children's intelligence. The child will feel special for being in on the secret while younger siblings still believe.
It will make it easier for the child to deal with fundie literal believers in religion later on.

It doesn't make sense to me either.. Why give the credit of your hard earned spendings on a guy in a red suit?

People can decide wrong from right based on anything that happens to engage their mind. Fantasy just happens to be easier to swallow than reality.
