"The War on Christmas"?

Why to people actually believe this is an issue? Why does it bother them that some people say "Happy Holidays"? Does it really matter? Why do I have to listen to these stupid pissed of bigots every year? Is ANYONE stopping them from saying "Marry Christmas" and why does it matter what other people say? Isn't new years right after Christmas so doesn't Happy Holidays make sense?

Chanukah - Dec. 20-28 - wish people a Happy Chanukah or Peace.

Yule - Dec. 22 ( and the reason for the season - why Christmas comes in Dec) - Have a Blessed Yule!

Christmas - Dec. 25 "Merry Christmas!

    Anyone - Happy Holidays!

If you are sincerely giving someone your best wishes for the holidays, what difference does it really make? Do what makes you happy and accept with grace whatever others say with good will.

    I don't get it either.

They say it's a "war on Christmas" against Christians... but in reality it's the Christians declaring war on people for choosing to say Happy Holidays.

They can say what they want-- no one really gets offended by Merry Christmas.

I do get offended when they tell me I have to say it... I've always said Happy HOlidays since as long as I remember (the 70s before it became taboo).

And to boot, I don't celebrate Christmas, I have a different holiday; so Merry Christmas would not be my 2nd choice anyway.

The "war on Christmas" is such a joke. It was created and perpetuated by the right-wing media; the vast majority of atheists don't give a crap what you say to them regarding the holidays.

As for people who are bothered by "happy holidays," they're just butthurt that American society is finally realizing that Christianity isn't the only religion here.

My girlfriend likes to watch "Ballykiss Angels", which is an Irish "soap opera" on public television. In Ireland, which is mostly Catholic, they say "Happy Christmas". I wonder if the fundies would get their (TOO-tight) whities in a bunch over that?

As noted, there are plenty of other faiths in the US than christianity and plenty of other winter solstice festivals of all sorts, up to and including the new year. Merchants, who make a large percentage of their annual sales during the "christmas" season, do use "Happy Holidays" to accomodate all of these beliefs. The almight dollar will always trump the fundie minority.

    Blessings on your Journey!

Agreed. I find "Happy Holidays" apropos b/c it encompasses Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas, etc. all in one. It's easier that way, and means the same thing. People will always need something to complain about. Just like people get mad about X-mas. (like your are x-ing Christ out of Christmas) These people don't understand that X is the Greek letter for Chi (translation=Christ) so it means the same thing.

I hadn't heard anything about that this year. It wasn't an issue fifty years ago- but that was before the burgeoning of radical fundamentalism. It's fine with me if they want to continue linking their holiday with pepper sprayings in WalMart stores, shootings in WalMart parking lots and rampant displays of personal and corporate greed everywhere. It's counterintuitive to insist on identifying your religion with that stuff, but that's kind of the nature of the beast that wants it identified that way.

Its a war that right wing Christian fundies invented, waged, and continue to fight all by themselves. Its like a childing playing an imaginary game that only exists in his/her own mind. The rest of us have no problem with Christmas per se, just the idea of cramming a religion down anyones throat

Religious people get a warm, smug feeling when they feel that they have been persecuted for their beliefs.

It gives them a martyrdom feeling like the christians in the good old days that were fed to the lions.

Why would we wish that you marry Christmas when instead we want you to have a Merry Christmas!

  • It's a made-up issue to deflect attention away from their real goal to eradicate gay Americans, atheists, Muslims, Latinos, Blacks, single moms, etc.
