did john adams really say this?
there's a quote i keep seeing attributed to john adams posted in the comments sections of various news sites. i can't seem to find any actual source of the quote, which leads me to believe he probably never actually said it. but i don't know for sure, so i was wondering if anyone could settle this for me. if he did say it, please provide the source of the quote. thanks.
the quote:
"When economic power became concentrated in a few hands, then political power flowed to those possessors and away from the citizens, ultimately resulting in an oligarchy or tyranny."
gerry, i found the book in pdf format online. i did a search for the word oligarchy and nothing came back. nothing for economic either. are you sure you are talking about the right book?
*nothing for "economic power" either...

Curious,
he certainly did make this statement. The statement is thoroughly cited in "John Adams" by David McCullough ISBN: 978-1-416-57588-7. Go to the back of the book and you will be able to find the exact source of McCullough's reference however, it was directly taken from a letter that he wrote to one James Sullivan in 1776. The letter is still preserved and followed the meeting of the below link here. This is the best I could come up with on short notice.
Best of luck,
Gerry
Edit: The index section of the book has the letters per chapter ~ search "Sullivan".
Edit2: Check "Sullivan" in the index section and then see the actual reference to the letters associated with Adams. Its in there ~ will require additional work on your end mind you but you'll have what you need. Best of luck!
