Why do Christians reject Thor and still have Thursday?

And how is it any different than the word "Christ" being in "Christmas"?

Update:

@solarius: I agree completely. This was a response to a question about how an atheist can celebrate Christmas, because of the "Christ" thing.

I have other concerns in life than worrying about the etymology of the word "Thursday". In the Christian schools I grew up attending, kids were taught in the very early grades about why the days and months are named as they are. It was never a big issue. Christ being in Christmas is simply a derivation of "Christ's Mass". Whether things are named after my deity or anybody else's doesn't strike me as something worth fretting over. If anything, it's an opportunity to learn about other customs, cultures and gods.

It is strange that christians celebrate the Norse gods every week, such as Thor. Are they closet pagans? They celebrate the Roman gods every month. Don't they feel hypocritical? How do they explain it? You are right. If christians feel that they own the primary pagan holiday simply because they renamed it, then they should be bright enough to know that they still celebrate several forms of ancient gods.

Ruthorford tried to submit his own calendar for Jehovah's Witnesses but it never gained traction. Some light gets brighter, some gets embarrassingly hidden and denied.

You have no logical alternative but to accept that Jesus is God:

“I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic-on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg-or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse.

You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. “

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,

    Col 2:9 (NIV)

I hope you have a happy Christ-mas (Jesus the reason for the Holy-day)
