He has been detained for over a year, spending the majority of this time in solitary confinement; without a trial. he has not yet been convicted and yet he has spent this long in prison, and will be facing around 50 years in jail. If he had not signed up for this, I would oppose this sentence vigorously. From my understanding he was just doing what he felt was right, by exposing information relating to military procedures that he found unethical. Whistle blowing isn't bad, and I think he was in the right.

PVT Manning violated his oath and released classified information. It had little to do with the military and much to do with the Department of State. He was pissed off and thought he and his opinion was more important than the safety and security of the United States. If there is any justice he will receive life for this treasonous act. I was glad to see this week that some of his command structure were sentenced for failure to supervise and other problems.

    So he should.

As part of the military we all sign up to the official secrets act (or the american equivalent) which effectively states that if we release military secrets we face treason. He signed the form, he pays the price.

It is treason to release classified miltary information during a time of war. He could have and possibly did cause soldiers to get hurt or die. The regulation states he should be executed. Another soldier did something similar in our history. His name was Benedict Arnold, perhaps you heard of him.
