What's the deal with goalies?

I've seen some interviews with Ken Dryden from the 70s and heard some stuff from my cousin, who plays minor hockey, as well as interviews with former and current NHL stars, and there seems to be a kind of consensus that goalies are a bit.... off. I dig it, I think it's great, but does anybody have any idea why?

People always say it's wierd for somebody to wanna be hit by pucks... I always tell them it's wierd to wanna lose your teeth. We're all a bit "off"

The goalies are always interesting guys. I don't know what it is but from experience they're pretty odd. Not that it's a bad thing.
