What do you think of a mother that thinks she's potty training her 11 month old?
my husbands' friend's wife has been publicly declaring for the past 2 days on fb that her kid used the potty 2x and in no time he'll be potty trained. after the first post i commented, "whaaaaatt?" after the 2nd i broke down and said, "it's waaayyy tooo early for this." she commented back that it happened 2x and when she says pp her kid apparently gives her some indication that they need to pee. i call bs...kids copy at this age and the brain just isn't developed enough for potty training. i told her that she's just catching accidents and to have fun with that...am i the only one that thinks she is in for a terrible surprise (that her kid is not some sort of super-genius)?
for Ellen: i looked it up and it sounds like i thought...not that the kid is actually trained but the parent is!!!

Ya, Ive heard of "elimination communication" and it's total bull shît... 11 months is WAY to young to be potty training. My Grandmother-in-law brags that her daughter was completely trained at 14 months!! As an adult her daughter has had mental problems and after going to a counselor she discovered its because she was potty trained before she was mentally ready. Basically her mom forced her to stay on the potty until something came out, and she would feed her baby food WHILE she sat on the pot (nasty)
Potty training shouldn't be forced on a kid to early, simple as that.
Tamara- if your SIX month old isn't wetting his diaper something's wrong with him...

Potty training is when the child is aware that they need to go and then they go in a potty. In developing countries where women don't have access to diapers..it's common for the mom to make a sound whenever her baby poops or pees so that over the course of only a few months, the baby will automatically attempt to go when the mom makes the "potty sound"....I just don't see how this can work in a western country...we don't let our babies go diaperless at all outside of "naked baby time" or "diaper rash clearing time" ...and such a thing requires a constantly naked but and a mom who is on top of the whole potty on que thing every single moment....

http://www.diaperfreebaby.org/ used this, and by 9 months we were had the lil guy going about twice a day. By 18 months, we have been down to a diaper in the morning and before bed. On a rare day he will need a third. We are enjoying the savings in not needing to buy diapers all the time.
edit: THE PARENT IS NOT TRAINED, the child is trained. I work with disabled adults. We have a severe wheelchair bound 17 yr old girl, non-verbal and about the level of a 2 yr old. She smacks an open palm, and we know she needs to use the potty. What is the difference? Has she trained us? or is she trained? she can't walk, she can't talk, she has spasms all day and drools alot. but she knows when she needs to go and gives us a sign to take her. the baby does the same. the BABY IS TRAINED to communicate needs to parents. Mine says ahh ahh. This is a word for him, to tell me to take him to potty. Babies are NOT DUMB DROOLERS UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE NEEDS. You can tell the different cries from a baby, and the different cries will tell you food/change me/I'm tired/and so on.

My child was potty trained at 11 months because of elimination communication. It's a cultural belief that younger babies cannot be potty trained earlier than 2 or 3. Mothers in native cultures in Africa use elimination communication to toilet their babies. Each culture has its own set of norms, and there is no right or wrong way to do it. The only wrong way is a way that is abusive or hurtful to the child. I would suggest seeking to understand rather than to judge, and perhaps do a little research and elighten yourself. Sounds like maybe the two of you aren't really the "friends" you perhaps think you are.

You might want to research "elimination communication", a form of very early "potty training" that works for some people.

at 10 months i started sitting my boy on the toilet as he refused to do #2 in his nappy was ending up blocked up so each night we would sit him in the toilet and he would go as he got older we just put him on more and more months later he was toilet trained he will jsut take himself when he needs to go still does i havnt had a accident in such a long time, i wouldnt call it toilet training at that age but a few months later we did start the toilet training

Actually if they can walk it's not too early- one of the key indicators for readiness to toilet train is staying dry overnight. My 9 month old can do this. My son was dry overnight at 6 months. I use cloth nappies so it's pretty obvious when they wet overnight!
From what I have been reading on the matter, if you wait until after 18 months to toilet train you might be leaving it too late and making things more difficult than they need to be.

very crazy. I mean you can do what ever you want too. But i think you should let your baby do its own thing and go in a diaper and be happy.

You can start "potty training" at birth.
