My mom is B12 deficient, but she eats meat?

My mom got a blood test, and found out that she is B12 deficient, even though she eats meat. The doctor says it is because she drinks so much coffee. The doctor says she is so low is B12 that her red blood cells are starting to become enlarged. The doctor recommended 1,000 mcg a day. What are the best B12 vitamins out there? Should she take just B12 or a B complex. What are some foods fortified with B12?

Thanks :)

Any b12 will do, but the BEST are sublingual or liquid form of the supplement, since it's the most easily absorbed by the body. B-complex couldn't hurt, many people take it to promote energy. Foods fortified with b12 are usually alternative milks and cereals. But nutritional yeast is also a good source of 12.

Just because someone eats meat doesn't meat that they receive all the b12 necessary. Also, as the people above me stated, the older you are, the more you need. And the coffee doesn't help (it also hurts with iron absorption also). But it IS full of anti-oxidants, but she'd probably be better off eating berries instead.

As a person ages, their ability to absorb nutrients from foods also decreases. Plus, if she's post-menopausal, that could exacerbate the problem.

    Vitamin B-12 Deficiency Causes:

According to the CDC, about 1 in every 31 Americans over the age of 51 is deficient in vitamin B12. This may be because they don't find animal-based foods as tasty or as easy to digest as they were when they were younger. The Linus Pauling Institute says that about 10 to 30 percent of people older than 60 have a condition called atrophic gastritis, making it difficult for them to absorb dietary vitamin B-12. Pernicious anemia, irritable bowel syndromes and some types of stomach or intestinal surgeries are also risk factors for vitamin B-12 deficiency. Some prescription drugs can affect B-12 absorption, too, according to the ODS.

Twinlab b12 dot vitamis are really good. I use them I'm vegan and they keep me not deficient. And yes coffee does do that as well as for many other essential vitamins and minerals. She should eat more dark leafy green with a vitamin C food source(like some lemon in her water),and not have coffee a half and hour before or after this. Iron and b12 help each other. Coffee leeches iron and calcium as well.

This is common in adults and frequently is an issue with failure to absorb the vitamin. Read the link below for the many things that can inhibit absorbtion like smoking and alcohol.

Injection and patches are sometimes used if digestive absorption is impaired, but there is evidence that this course of action may not be necessary with modern high potency oral supplements (such as 0.5 to 1 mg or more). Even pernicious anemia can be treated entirely by the oral route. These supplements carry such large doses of the vitamin that 1% to 5% of high oral doses of free crystalline B12 is absorbed along the entire intestine by passive diffusion.

Vitamin World sells one of the highest rated supplements. There are also prescription one that your Doctor may have prescribed.

There are fortified foods rich in B12 on sale. Some natural sources for B12 are meats like liver, lamb and beef, fish and fish eggs, eggs and cheese.

There is an anemia that is specific to Vitamin B12, fyi. And I don't think it's from drinking coffee.
