What's a magic mushroom trip like?

I've heard two very different things: one is that you see things that aren't there and the other is that you just feel enlightened and maybe see some color distortion, but nothing totally unreal. Which is it? Or is it determined by special conditions? Also, can someone please explain how psilocybin affects the brain?

If you eat a small or medium sized dose:

It is like nothing you can possibly imagine. Seriously, when it's all over you will look back at the person you were 8 hours ago and laugh--like when a child asks a really silly question about something really big that they couldn't possibly understand, and you chuckle, "you have no idea."

But if I had to describe it...

imagine everything in your room changing completely. Not the shape, size or color so much, but it's presence--the way it fits into your room and your life. You will see something you have looked at everyday since you can remember (the sky, for instance), and it will look totally different (literally you will "see" it differently, as though it had changed somehow).

As far as actually seeing things, that happens. You won't have full on hallucinations. Alien creatures and pink elephants won't come out of nowhere, small objects won't grow legs and dance around, and, for the most part, things won't change shape and turn different colors (this can happen at higher doses).

Edges will become more defined, sharper, colors will be stronger, lights brighter, things may tend to ebb, flow, breathe, sparkle, and shift around in other little ways.

The biggest direct change to your vision will be the presence of fractals. What does that mean? Again, hard to explain, but imagine a sheet of grid paper with a million perfect little squares, and inside each square is a diamond, and inside each diamond is an eyeball, and each eyeball has 32 wings, and each wing has a sheet of grid paper with a million tiny squares attached to it, etc... now imagine seeing every square, diamond, eyeball and wing all at once...

As for how it affects the brain:

In layman's terms, psilocin (the 'magic') is nearly identical to serotonin (important brain chemical that your body produces). When you take mushrooms, psilocin gets into the receptors that are designed to fit serotonin and causes some weird things to happen. Normally, serotonin makes the 'doors' in your mind close after a thought passes through them, but psilocin isn't as effective at the job so some doors get left open. These open doors allow your thoughts to flow freely in new directions, and your brain is able to process a greater number of thoughts at a time. That's paraphrasing it pretty heavily.

On average, you only use 8-10% of your brain at once. Psilocin allows you to use a lot more. This is actually a safe process for a healthy mind to undergo, but, if you have any preexisting psychological problems they may worsened (especially psychoses).

It really depends on the amount that you consume and whether you consume them in tea form or in whole form. The tea form tends to hit you much faster because there is no need for the mushrooms to be broken down by the digestive track. If you choose to try mushrooms, you should be in a good state of mind. Thinking about mythological creatures can lead to a bad trip because many of these creatures are malevolent. Mushrooms are a very different feel from 420. For me it is not a relaxed feeling, but rather a super heightened state of mind. I find that having something like Ambien or Xanax to be a godsend for a bad trip because these drugs can shut you down so that you can sleep the trip off.
