Metal Fans: How about some redneck black metal?
ok, so a few days ago I posted my top 5 metal albums from 2011, and one of them was Taake - Noregs Vaapen. Definitely the least favourite of all who answered the question (which is fine...traditional black metal isn't everyones choice...however, on this album, Hoest (who plays all instruments in the band) employs the use of a Banjo in songs. First time i heard it, i was more than surprised as Taake general has a "raw" style of black metal...and Banjo seems like the opposite sound of everything that is black metal, but I really think it fits in this song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKdSwyrpKxU (banjo starts at 3:20)
MQ: Thoughts on the fusion of banjo/black metal?
MQ2: Favourite song that uses a surprisingly different instrument?
***Brian: thats true...even in your songs, you tend to use quite a few unconventional instruments/sounds...but that's what makes it unique
***Brian: hope you also have a Merry Christmas!
***The Brain: thanks for the links!! interesting

Well, i don't much care for the song, as I had said in your last question, but I do rather enjoy the banjo part, lol. It makes it sound folky, even if it is a "redneck" instrument. Actually, on second listen, I'm liking this song a bit more... not so much that I'd go out and buy the album yet, but I think it's possible that it could grow on me, lol.
MQ2:
Stone Cold Metal by Ensiferum also has a banjo in it, at 6:06:

Raise The Noise by Helloween has some kind of flute at 3:04

Пастушок by Калевала (Yeah, i don't know what they say either) has a mouth harp and an accordion in it... actually all their songs have the accordion, so this one's unique in having the mouth harp:

The "Unlaced" album by Emilie Autumn has a violin, which by itself isn't all that surprising, until you hear it (There's no guitars... like what Apocalyptica did with cellos, but she did it with a violin)

And there was another song, that I honestly can't remember, that had a theremin in it (that sci-fi instrument you don't touch, you just hold your hands over it to play)

To consume an auditory segment of folk banjo chicken pickin in Black Metal can be a very liberating experience, yes I do like that part. in fact, I like the rest of the song after 3:20 also. the guitar riffs change a little bit more than the previous more open chord approach to the song.
the chicken pickin was pretty average in technique, however, I respect the technique all around nonetheless. Brad Paisley has one of the most notable techniques in guitar world I suppose, Bryan Jobi has also got great technique but he is more blue grass underground not a very well known player, but good. then in mainstream "rock / metal" you have John 5 who is pretty good, never could understand why he teamed up with Marilyn Manson I suppose for the money and fame status.
I would rather play live guitar for a huge cemetery full of copses than play in front of a crowd of Marilyn Manson fans, in the end you'll be remembered just about the same by both parties.
MQ: All for it huge yay, experiment be innovative exercise your musical liberty.

Hahaha!! That was seriously funny! :D I loved it the banjo! But i think this should be used in moderation..i dont know about the rest of the album..so hopefully the banjo is used intelligently (bcz im definitely gonna check out the album)...Rest of the song is solid too!
MA2 : Cant think of many ..what comes to mind is this..
