Clownfish and Damsel Compatibility?
I have a 55 gallon (soon to be) reef tank (We've just started this, and don't have much in the way of an actual reef, just a lot of live rock.).
Anyway, our first fish was a pair of clownfish as the guy at the aquarium shop said they were the best as far as starters go. We're ready to add more fish, and I really want something blue and/or yellow, but our tank is far too small for any sort of Tang (which would be my first choice, I love the yellow ones.). I was looking at some bright blue and yellow damsels, and was curious if anyone had any experience keeping them with the clowns?
I've read they can be aggressive, and definitely don't want to get any until I have more information on them.
And just some background, we have the two clowns as well as 5 snails, 2 peppermint shrimp, and three tiny hermits living in this tank.

Damsels can be quite aggressive at times. Since the clowns have been in the tank and the damsel would come after you might be ok, especially since it is a large tank. Just be careful and watch for a while and make sure the damsel is smaller than the clowns. Stay away from domino damsels, the black ones with 3 white spots. They get quite large and can terrorize a tank. Oh btw you need to add to your clean up crew, You need 1 snail for every 1 or 2 gallons and one hermit for each 2 -3 gallons, So you can see you have a long way to go. These are the ones who break down the excess food and other detritus and keep the tank clean. They are important to the health of the tank.

the clowns are damselfish. They would be fine with many other types of damsels since they were in the reef first. However, If you get other types of damsels, this will be the last fish you can add to your tank. Stick to less aggressive fish.

Damsels are not aggressive at all. They actually accept almost any other tank mate and are important to reefs. But, they can be very territorial because they like to be in anemones like clown fish. So you should have one for the damsel it self.

Well at the petstore I got my damsel at it wa housed with a 8 yr old clownfish and they seemed fine and I think it was the 29 gal biocube. So I guess it may depend on temperament.
